Fine hairs of the head and nape areas have been used as donor sources in eyelash transplantation but are straight, coarse, and grow rapidly, requiring frequent eyelash maintenance. This is the first reported case of eyelash transplantation by follicular unit extraction using leg hair as a donor source; findings were compared with that of another patient who underwent a similar procedure with do...

Eyelashes are ubiquitous, although their function has long remained a mystery. In this study, we elucidate the aerodynamic benefits of eyelashes. Through anatomical measurements, we find that 22 species of mammals possess eyelashes of a length one-third the eye width. Wind tunnel experiments confirm that this optimal eyelash length reduces both deposition of airborne particles and evaporation o...

Phthiriasis palpebrarum, caused by the phthirus pubis, is a rare cause of blepharoconjunctivitis, and is therefore often neglected. We present 2 patients who suffered itching and irritation at the right upper eyelid. Biomicroscopic examination showed a few lice and nits anchored to the eyelashes. Dermatologic examination revealed the presence of numerous lice and nits at the trunk and pubic are...

Demodex spp may cause blepharitis and palpebra skin lesions. Since eyelash demodicosis seems to be quite spreadable in the community, every patient with chronic non-diagnosed blepharitis should be examined for Demodex spp. Tea tree oil treatment may be an efficient and safe therapeutical choice against ocular demodicosis.

In this paper, a new method of automatically detecting human eyelids using deformable templates is proposed. Deformable templates are often used in eye’s feature detection although there are several drawbacks such as high computational complexity, unexpected shrinking of the templates and rotation of the template. Based on the analysis on these problems, an improved template for eyelid edge det...

Introduction: Entropion and ectropion with involutional changes are the most common eyelid malpositions. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid margin turns inwards against the globe and ectropion is a malposition in which the lid turns outwards or is pulled away its normal position from the globe. Knowledge of eyelid problems and their abnormalities is a key to plan a successful surgical...

A series of 112 eyelids with symptomatic aberrant eyelashes were treated by cryotherapy using a specially designed large-surfaced high-flow nitrous oxide probe. Either thermocouple control to -20 degrees C or timing of the application to 20 seconds (lower lid) or 25 seconds (upper lid) was used to monitor the freeze. Both techniques obtained a high cure rate and a low incidence of complications.
