Flavobacterium columnare is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes columnaris disease of freshwater fish. Flavobacterium columnare strain C#2 was isolated from a diseased warm-water fish and is typed as genomovar II. The genome consists of a single 3.33-Mb circular chromosome with 2,689 predicted coding genes.

Sudden disease outbreaks may not necessarily reflect a recent pathogen introduction but instead arise from the disruption of host-pathogen equilibrium. Together with invasive species, emerging pathogens pose significant threats to biodiversity. The dynamics each stressor have been studied separately, yet rarely when interacting. Using 40-year dataset, we tested hypothesis that an fish leads suc...

Gas-exchange structures are critical for acquiring oxygen, but they also represent portals for pathogen entry. Local mucosal immunoglobulin responses against pathogens in specialized respiratory organs have only been described in tetrapods. Since fish gills are considered a mucosal surface, we hypothesized that a dedicated mucosal immunoglobulin response would be generated within its mucosa on ...

Lactococcus garvieae is an important fish pathogen and an emerging opportunistic human pathogen, as well as a component of natural microbiota in dairy and meat products. We present the first report of genome sequences of L. garvieae I113 and Tac2 strains isolated from a meat source.

Next-generation sequencing is revealing the complex interactive networks of host-bacteria interactions, as it is now possible to screen in detail the microbiota harbored by a host. This study investigated the influence of a probiotic treatment on the survival and microbiota of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis), focusing on its disturbance of the natural microbiota (dysbiosis). The results ind...

Photobacteriosis or fish pasteurellosis is a bacterial disease affecting wild and farm fish. Its etiological agent, the gram negative bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida, is responsible for important economic losses in cultured fish worldwide, in particular in Mediterranean countries and Japan. Efforts have been focused on gaining a better understanding of the biology of the path...

Specific PCR detection and electron microscopy of Flavobacterium columnare revealed the risk of false-negative results in molecular detection of this fish pathogen. Freezing and thawing destroyed the cells so that DNA was for the most part undetectable by PCR. The detection of bacteria was also weakened after prolonged enrichment cultivation of samples from infected fish.

Edwardsiella tarda is an important pathogen for fish. The strain NCIMB 2034, obtained from the National Collection of Industrial Food and Marine Bacteria, was isolated from unknown diseased fish in the United States. The draft genome sequence has 3.79 Mb with a G+C content of 57.1% and >3,340 protein-coding genes.

Lactococcus garvieae is a Gram-positive bacterium considered an important opportunistic emerging human pathogen and also a well-recognized fish pathogen. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of Lactococcus garvieae strain 21881 (2,164,557 bp, with a G+C content of 37.9%), which represents the first report of a genome sequence on Lactococcus garvieae.
