First version: April, 2001 This version: February, 2005 ABSTRACT This paper analyzes a model of investment with fixed investment costs and capital market imperfections. In this model finance influences the level of capital firms hold, as well as the frequency at which they invest. In consequence investment reacts nonlinearly with respect to shocks to productivity and liquidity. Liquidity and pr...

We consider some risk indicators of vectorial risk processes. These indicators take into account the dependencies between business lines as well as some temporal dependencies. By using stochastic algorithms, we may estimate the minimum of these risk indicators, under a fixed total capital constraint. This minimization may apply to capital reserve allocation.

This study examines the relationship between coal consumption and economic growth for 15 emerging market economies within a multivariate panel framework over the period 1980–2006. The heterogeneous panel cointegration results indicate there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between real GDP, coal consumption, real gross fixed capital formation, and the labor force. While in the long-run bo...

A balance sheet structure including fixed assets, net working capital and risky long-term debt leads to a model for option pricing of the firm’s equity. Each of the financial components constitutes a source of risk. A hedge based on three distinct options and the stock enables risk neutral valuation and avoids the problems of lack of tradability of the assets and market incompleteness reflected...

Empirical results through a fixed effects regression model show that government size has a negative effect on growth mainly through hampering capital accumulation. When a sample is divided into OECD and non-OECD countries, the negative effect of government size on capital accumulation persists for non-OECD countries but not for OECD countries.

The paper explores factors that lead to accumulation or decumulation of firms’ cash reserves. In particular, we empirically examine whether additional future fixed capital and R&D investment expenditures induce firms to change their liquidity ratio while considering the role of market imperfections. Implementing a dynamic framework on a panel of US, UK and German firms, we find that firms in al...

This paper develops a multi-year lag Input-Holding-Output (I-H-O) Model on education with exclusion of the idle capital to address the reasonable education structure in support of a sustainable development strategy in China. First, the model considers the multiyear lag of human capital because the lag time of human capital is even longer and more important than that of fixed capital. Second, it...

IN A TYPICAL workweek, one in every four manufacturing production workers in the United States is employed at night. This fraction fluctuates sharply over the business cycle, accounting disproportionately for business cycle changes in employment. The variation in work at night amounts to over 40 percent of the cyclical changes in the employment of manufacturing production workers. While cyclica...

There are two facts related to the reallocation of physical assets across plants. In the macro level, capital reallocation, measured as the aggregate sales of used capital, is procyclical. In the micro level, selling used capital is costly. In this paper, I investigate the quantitative contribution of adverse selection in the used capital market towards generating the procyclical capital reallo...

The purpose of this paper is to see whether and how G-10 banks have complied with the 1988 Basel Capital Accord. The interest of this study lies in the fact that the standardized approach of the New Basel Accord is similar to the 1988 agreement. However, very little is known about the reaction of non-US banks to the imposition of fixed minimum capital requirements. Building on previous studies,...
