One of the critical issues in thyroid cancer diagnostic is differentiation between follicular adenoma, follicular carcinoma and the follicular variant of papillary carcinoma, which in some cases is not possible based on histopathological features only. In this paper we performed molecular profiling of thyroid tissue aiming to identify metabolites characteristic for different types of thyroid ca...

Our aim was to assess malignancy risk in adenomatoid nodules and suspicious follicular lesions of the thyroid obtained by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. Retrospective research was performed of 276 patients who underwent thyroid surgery after preoperative ultrasound-guided FNA diagnosis of either adenomatoid nodule, cellular follicular lesion, "suspicious for follicular neoplasm" or foll...

Around 5% of the general population have palpable thyroid nodules. Although most thyroid tumours are benign, thyroid cancer represents the most common malignancy of the endocrine system, comprising mainly follicular and papillary thyroid carcinomas. Previous studies have shed some light on the molecular pathogenesis of thyroid cancer but there have not been any comprehensive mass spectrometry-b...

type of midline neck masses in children. Though usually benign, 1% of cysts may undergo neoplastic change. The most common histological subtype is papillary carcinoma (80%) followed in order of frequency by mixed follicular-papillary, squamous, follicular, anaplastic, and hurthle-cell carcinoma (1). The synchronous occurrence of thyroglossal duct carcinoma and thyroid carcinoma in the thyroid g...

Thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a standard procedure for the clinical triage of thyroid nodules. The diagnosis of an adequately sampled thyroid FNA is generally grouped into three categories: benign, malignant, and indeterminate. The latter group usually includes follicular neoplasm, follicular lesion, and sometimes a more specific diagnosis such as Hurthle cell neoplasm or follicular l...

Immunohistochemical markers (IGF-1, IGF-1R, VEGF, FGF-2, RARα and RXR) were evaluated in healthy canine thyroid glands (n=8) and in follicular-compact (n=8) and compact thyroid carcinomas (n=8). IGF-1, IGF-1R and VEGF expression was higher in fibroblasts and endothelial cells of compact carcinoma than in healthy glands (P < 0.05). Compared to follicular-compact carcinoma, compact carcinoma had ...

This is a rare case of metastatic follicular carcinoma of thyroid in a patient with no history of thyroid problem. A frontal bone mass was examined microscopically and showed the pattern of metastatic follicular carcinoma. Thyroid ultrasonography then revealed a nodule in left lobe. Total thyroidectomy was done for the patient and microscopic examination confirmed the diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE To see the expression of cytokeratin 19, a proven helpful marker for the differential diagnosis of neoplastic follicular patterned lesions of thyroid. METHODS This was a retrospective study carried out in the Department of Pathology, Basic Medical Sciences Institute, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi from 2000 to 2005. The haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained sections were...

PURPOSE Thyroid nodules are common, with a lifetime risk of developing a clinically significant thyroid nodule of 10% or higher. Preoperative diagnosis was greatly enhanced by the introduction of fine needle aspiration in the 1970s, but there has been little advancement since that time. Discrimination between benign and malignant follicular neoplasms is currently not possible by fine needle asp...

BACKGROUND Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common thyroid cancer (85%). Follicular thyroid carcinoma is the second most common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for up to 10% of all thyroid cancers. Medullary thyroid carcinoma accounts for only 5-8% of thyroid cancers. Concurrent medullary, follicular, and papillary carcinomas of the thyroid gland are extremely rare and reported scarce...
