We propose several methods for constructing nested (nearly) orthogonal designs intended for multi-fidelity computer experiments. Such designs are two (nearly) orthogonal designs with one nested within the other. Our methods exploit nesting in such discrete structures as fractional factorial designs, Hadamard matrices, and rotation matrices. Examples are given illustrating the proposed methods.

A new class of two-level non-regular fractional factorial designs is defined. We call this class an affinely full-dimensional factorial design, meaning that design points in the design of this class are not contained in any affine hyperplane in the vector space over F2. The property of the indicator function for this class is also clarified. A fractional factorial design in this class has a des...

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is known to cause diseases of various severities. There is increasing interest to find drug combinations to treat HSV-1 by reducing drug resistance and cytotoxicity. Drug combinations offer potentially higher efficacy and lower individual drug dosage. In this paper, we report a new application of fractional factorial designs to investigate a biological system...

Recent literature has proposed integrating observed noise variables into a factorial design structure as an alternative robust design strategy. Because noise factors are often difficult to control or randomize, observing their values may be useful. This research compares existing alternatives involving unreplicated fractional factorial designs and observable noise factors.

Once a simulation model is developed, designed experiments may be employed to efficiently optimize the system. Designed experiments are used on “real” production systems as well. The first step is to screen for important independent variables. Several screening methods are compared and contrasted in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and robustness. These screening methods range from the class...

This paper aims to generalize and unify classical criteria for comparisons of balanced lattice designs, including fractional factorial designs, supersaturated designs and uniform designs. We present a general majorization framework for assessing designs, which includes a stringent criterion of majorization via pairwise coincidences and flexible surrogates via convex functions. Classical orthogo...
