An experiment was designed to compare the freezing of an aqueous solution in glass microcapillaries and in thin films. The velocity dependence of the ice front propagation in glass capillaries with radii of 87.5 microm-1.5 microm was observed. A critical capillary radius r(0), corresponding to certain thermal conditions, was obtained, below which the ice growth inside the capillaries was retard...

Hydrophilic patterns were directly written on a hydrophobic glass substrate with a microplasma jet and used for surface-directed capillary flow operations.

The propagation of a chemical wave in a narrow cone-shaped glass capillary was investigated. When a chemical wave propagats from the wider end to the narrower end, it slows, stops, and then disappears. A phenomenological model that considers the surface effect of the glass is proposed, and this model reproduces the experimental trends.

Needs which have arisen in ophthalmic research have motivated the development of a six degree of freedom parallel micromanipulator. The first application of the tool will be in the treatment of retinal vemus occlusion, for which micron-scale spherical movement of a glass micropipette tip inside the eye is required. The initial speration mode will be open loop while future operation will be in a...

The formal transfer potentials of hydrophilic alkali metal ions Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+) were determined at water|room temperature ionic liquid (w|RTIL) interfaces. A working curve for an interface held at the tip of a micropipette (25 μm in diameter) was developed through simulated cyclic voltammograms (CVs) via finite element analysis with Comsol Multiphysics software. This method...

The effects of mechanical perturbations (shear stress, pressure) on microvascular permeability primarily have been examined in micropipette-cannulated vessels or in endothelial monolayers in vitro. The objective of this study is to determine whether acute changes in blood flow shear stress might influence measurements of hydraulic conductivity (L(p)) in autoperfused microvessels in vivo. Rat me...
