Dislocation is the most frequent serious complication following total hip replacement for subcapital femoral fracture. We report a prospective study, using matched groups, which compared the range of hip movement following hip replacement for arthritis and for fracture. The range of movement was significantly greater in the fracture group. We suggest that this is a predisposing factor for dislo...

We report 2 cases of hip dislocation after a total hip arthroplasty, which could not be successfully reduced by closed method. Post-manipulation radiographs revealed proximal migration of the prosthesis in both cases, which required open reduction. The pathogenesis and treatment of this hip dislocation is discussed.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) or congenital hip dysplasia (CDH) is the most prevalent developmental childhood hip disorder. It includes a wide spectrum of hip abnormalities ranging from dysplasia to subluxation and complete dislocation of the hip joint. The natural history of neglected DDH in adults is highly variable. The mean age of onset of symptoms is 34.5 years for dysplastic DD...

Surgical hip dislocation is the gold standard for treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). It utilizes an intermuscular and internervous approach to the hip. Concerns have been expressed that this approach causes soft tissue trauma resulting in post-operative muscle weakness of patients undergoing this procedure. We therefore asked whether surgical hip dislocation leads to (i) atrophy (...

[INTRODUCTION] Dislocation continues to be a common complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Many in vitro studies have reported the range of motion (ROM) of the hip, impingement, and dislocation mechanism, but the influence of muscle and soft tissue remains little explored. Many factors affect the prevalence of dislocation after THA, including soft tissue laxity, surgical approach, compon...

Introduction Hip arthroscopy has increased in frequency over 300% between 2004 and 2009, as it has become an important technique used most often to treat diagnoses of labral tears or femoroacetabular impingement. The procedure is most commonly performed in young adults aged 20-39 years and has been found to be an effective intervention for getting athletes back to their sport. An important cons...

It is accepted that a traumatic hip dislocation is a surgical emergency, this holds for the uncommon dislocation of the hip with femoral neck fracture however the surgical dilemma involves head salvage or replacement. This case report describes the method and technique for stabilisation of the rare and challenging isolated posterior hip dislocation with an ipsilateral femoral neck fracture. A 3...

I write in response to the letter written by Drs. George Hartofilakidis and George Babis commenting on the use of the term ‘‘developmental dysplasia of the hip’’ rather than ‘‘congenital hip dislocation.’’ There is currently no classification system or terminology that sufficiently captures the spectrum of pathology that can be seen in the newborn hip. Currently the term ‘‘developmental dysplas...

Bilateral traumatic hip dislocation is rarely seen. A patient who presented with simultaneous dislocation of both hips in opposite directions is presented in this case report. A 42-year-old female patient who was injured in a motor vehicle accident as a passenger was brought to the emergency department and was diagnosed with posterior fracture dislocation of the right hip and anterior dislocati...

The patient at the age of 34 and 150kg of body weight suffered left hip posterior dislocation with femoral head fracture in car crash accident. The patient had been admitted to hospital after midnight. The mechanism of injury goes as follows: axial force and flexion in the hip caused by impact of the car. The left leg clinically observed is in painful extension, with minimal movement, strong pa...
