Protease inhibitor therapy dramatically reduces HIV viral load, however, when patients stop taking their medications, their viral load can rebound. A new product called remune (the Salk HIV vaccine) appears to enhance the immune system's response to HIV. However, since remune is a therapeutic vaccine, it cannot prevent HIV infection. Clinical trials of remune are expected to begin in Canada.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is the most significant route of HIV transmission in children below the age of 15 yr. In India, perinatal HIV transmission, even after treatment, accounts for 5.4 per cent of HIV cases. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of anti-retro viral therapy (ART) or prophylactic treatment (PT) to control maternal viral loa...

BACKGROUND To evaluate the effects of HIV viral load, measured cross-sectionally and cumulatively, on the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth (pregnancy loss) among HIV-infected women enrolled in the Women's Interagency HIV Study between 1994 and 2013. METHODS We assessed three exposures: most recent viral load measure before the pregnancy ended, log10 copy-years viremia from initiation of anti...

BACKGROUND The blood HIV RNA viral load is the best-defined predictor of HIV transmission, in part due to ease of measurement and the correlation of blood and genital tract (semen or cervico-vaginal) viral load, although recent studies found semen HIV RNA concentration to be a stronger predictor of HIV transmission. There is currently no standardized method for semen collection when measuring H...

A woman at 41 weeks’ gestation presented to our hospital in December, 2009, in labour. She had a history of intravenous drug use, and was unaware of her HIV status. Rapid HIV-1 testing was positive and she had high viral load. A small-for-gestational-age boy was delivered vaginally, in good condition. 12 h after his birth virological analyses, comprising HIV 1-2 antibody western blot (gag, pol,...

BACKGROUND Evidence suggests an association between HIV infection and the presence of obstructive lung disease (OLD). However, the associations between specific markers of HIV infection and OLD remain unclear. A study was undertaken to determine the independent associations of HIV infection, CD4 cell count and plasma HIV viral load with the presence of OLD in an urban cohort. METHODS Clinical...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To assess the use of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viral load as a marker for lymphoma diagnosis in HIV-infected patients. We also aimed to identify the relationship between EBV viral load in plasma and the presence of EBV in lymphoma cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS Retrospective observational study of two HIV-infected populations: one of patients diagnosed with lymphoma ...

low-density malaria and infant HIV-1 viral load, the consequences of highdensity or clinical malaria need to be explored. If clinical malaria in infants increases HIV-1 viral load as it does in adults (1,2), our study underscores dual benefits of malaria treatment in the context of HIV: 1) keeping malaria in check, and 2) preventing an increase in HIV viral load. Ethical issues prevent prospect...
