Composites were fabricated by infiltration of molten Al–13Si–9Mg into porous SiC derived from wood. The composite microstructure retains the heterogeneous orthorhombic symmetry of the initial wood material. As compared to the uninfiltrated SiC preform, the composite shows much improved transverse compressive strength and stiffness, resulting in reduced anisotropy. 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Publ...

The effect of microstructural refinement and intercritical annealing on the mechanical properties and work-hardening response of a low carbon St12 steel was studied. It was revealed that intercritical annealing of the ferritic-pearlitic sheet results in the formation of a coarse-grained DP microstructure with discrete martensite islands normally formed in place of pearlitic colonies, which resu...

The study deals with arc resistance of composite Cu–Cr system materials of various compositions. The microstructure of materials exposed to an electric arc was investigated. Despite varying initial chromium contents, the same structure was formed in the arc exposure zones of all the tested materials.

Using the periodic unfolding method we construct the homogenization theory for the quasistatic initial boundary value problems with internal variables, which model the deformation behavior of viscoplastic materials with a periodic microstructure. The free energy associated with models is assumed to be positive semi-definite only.

Zinc phosphate, which is mainly used to protect metal form corrosion and abrasion, is one of the commonly used biomaterial and industry fields [1]. Herein, we demonstrate that the phase and microstructure of zinc phosphate prepared by phosphating on a stainless steel substrate can be significantly influenced by electron beam. Employing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and aberration-corre...

BACKGROUND Extracellular deposition of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the arterial wall is an essential early step in atherosclerosis. This process preferentially occurs at arterial branch points, reflecting a regional variation in lipoprotein-arterial wall interactions. In this study, we characterized the submicron microstructure of arterial wall collagen and elastin to evaluate its potentia...

The ability to identify and quantify changes in the microstructure of metal alloys is valuable in metal cutting and shaping applications. For example, certain metals, after being cryogenically and electrically treated, have shown large increases in their tool life when used in manufacturing cutting and shaping processes. However, the mechanisms of microstructure changes in alloys under various ...

The initial microstructure and mechanical properties of composite powders have a vital role in determining the microstructure and mechanical properties of the subsequent consolidated bulk composites. In this work, Al-based matrix composite powders with a dense and uniform distribution of metallic glass nanoparticles were obtained by high-energy milling. The results show that high-energy milling...

In this research a microstructure approach to reduce sodium levels in emulsion based foods is presented. If successful, this strategy will enable reduction of sodium without affecting consumer satisfaction with regard to salty taste. The microstructure approach comprised of entrapment of sodium in the internal aqueous phase of water-in-oil-in-water emulsions. These were designed to destabilise ...
