A new approach to the inverse-scattering technique of Alekseev is presented which permits real-pole soliton solutions of the Ernst equations to be considered. This is achieved by adopting distinct real poles in the scattering matrix and its inverse. For the case in which the electromagnetic field vanishes, some explicit solutions are given using a Minkowski seed metric. The relation with the co...

A B€acklund transformation both in bilinear form and in ordinary form for the transformed Vakhnenko equation is derived. An inverse scattering problem is formulated. The inverse scattering method has a third-order eigenvalue problem. A procedure for finding the exact N -soliton solution of the Vakhnenko equation via the inverse scattering method is described. The procedure is illustrated by con...

This work investigates the scattering coefficients for inverse medium scattering problems. It shows some fundamental properties of the coefficients such as symmetry and tensorial properties. The relationship between the scattering coefficients and the far-field pattern is also derived. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the scattering coefficients with respect to changes in the permittivity and pe...

This series of two volumes brings the concept of scattering in widely different fields – all the way from Nuclear Physics, Atmospheric Sciences to Chemical Physics – into a unified framework. Most of the topics were classified according to the physical scales of the scattering process. This two volume series easily qualifies as the encyclopedia of scattering. There are six parts in this two vol...

This paper is a survey of the inverse scattering problem for time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic waves at fixed frequency. We begin by a discussion of “weak scattering” and Newton-type methods for solving the inverse scattering problem for acoustic waves, including a brief discussion of Tikhonov’s method for the numerical solution of ill-posed problems. We then proceed to prove a uniquen...

Inverse scattering series is the only nonlinear, direct inversion method for the multidimensional, acoustic or elastic equation. Recently developed techniques for inverse problems based on the inverse scattering series [Weglein et al., Geophys., 62 (1997), pp. 1975–1989; Top. Rev. Inverse Problems, 19 (2003), pp. R27–R83] were shown to require two mappings, one associating nonperturbative descr...

We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with steplike potentials which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap periodic potentials on different half-axes. We give a complete characterization of the scattering data, which allow unique solvability of the inverse scattering problem in the class of perturbations with finite second moment.

We propose an iterative approximate reconstruction algorithm for non-overdetermined inverse scattering at fixed energy E with incomplete data in dimension d ≥ 2. In particular, we obtain rapidly converging approximate reconstructions for this inverse scattering for E → +∞.
