BACKGROUND Universal salt iodization (USI) was introduced in China in 1995, but whether the iodine status is optimal is questionable. This study was conducted to assess the iodine nutrition among Zhejiang population in coastal regions in China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey for iodine nutritional status was conducted with general population (n=10,350), including pregnant and lactating wome...
BACKGROUND Infants are very sensitive to iodine deficiency. Breastfed infants are dependent on maternal iodine intake. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between maternal iodine status during lactation and infant weight and length. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate maternal iodine status and infant anthropometric measures in Henan Province, Chin...
A cross-sectional study was conducted in remote hilly areas (Shree Antu and Ranke) of eastern Nepal to assess iodine status among school children aged 6-12 years. Urinary iodine excretion was estimated in 292 urine samples. The median urinary iodine excretion was 187.52 ug/L, and 33.6% children have insufficient urinary iodine excretion.
Iodine is a necessary element for the production of thyroid hormone. We will review the impact of dietary iodine status on thyroid function in pregnancy. We will discuss iodine metabolism, homeostasis, and nutritional recommendations for pregnancy. We will also discuss the possible effects of environmental contaminants on iodine utilization in pregnant women.
Background & Aims: Nearly 38 million newborns are at risk of iodine deficiency and related disorders (IDDs) annually. Universal salt iodination strategy is the most cost-effective method to combat IDDs. The aims of this study were to evaluate dietary iodine status in pregnant women attending local healthy authority services in Urmia County and its associations with table-salt iodine content a...
BACKGROUND Lack of knowledge about iodine may be a risk factor for iodine deficiency in pregnant and lactating women. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge about iodine and predictors of iodine knowledge scores among pregnant and lactating women. The study also examined whether iodine knowledge scores were associated with iodine status. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on...
Severe iodine deficiency in pregnancy can result in cretinism. There is growing concern that less severe iodine deficiency may also affect fetal growth and development. A handful of prior small New Zealand studies focussed on pregnant women living in Dunedin. This study utilised biochemical, clinical and dietary indices to assess iodine status of 170 women living throughout New Zealand. The med...
OBJECTIVE To assess the iodine nutrition and thyroid function of pregnant women, lactating women and infants residing in areas where the Universal Salt Iodization program is in place. METHODS Pregnant women, lactating women and infants were selected randomly in the regions where iodized salt coverage rate is more than 90% since 2000. Urine iodine levels of pregnant woman, lactating woman and ...
OBJECTIVE To assess the iodine status and knowledge and practices related to iodine nutrition of Australian women during pregnancy. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted at a public antenatal clinic in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. One hundred thirty-nine pregnant women across all trimesters provided a spot urine sample (n = 110) and completed a short questionnaire (n = 139...
Taiwan was an iodine deficiency area and endemic goiter was common in 1940's. Mandatory salt iodization started in 1967, and a 1971 survey indicated that goiter rates in children decreased from 21.6% to 4.3%. To understand iodine status before the change of national salt iodization program in 2003, from mandatory to voluntary salt iodization, we retrospectively measured urinary iodine concentra...
