3-Aryltetrahydrobenzisoxazoles prepared en route to the coleophomone natural products and analogues, were found to undergo a remarkable base-mediated rearrangement to 2-aryltetrahydrobenzoxazoles. The scope of this unprecedented, facile transformation was probed: a range of analogues was produced, a mechanism proposed, and an application demonstrated by synthesis of a known herbicidal compound.

In the title compound, C(27)H(27)NO(4), the five-membered isoxazole ring adopts an envelope conformation and the six-membered pyran ring adopts a half-chair conformation. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the isoxazole ring and the chromene ring system is 54.95 (4)°.

In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(15)H(19)NO(5), the isoxazole ring adopts an envelope conformation. In the crystal structure, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O and C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules, in which they may be effective in the stabilization of the structure.
