An interlaboratory evaluation (seven centers) of VITEK2 System and Sensititre YeastOne® was conducted to test the antifungal susceptibilities of yeasts. The MICs of amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, and voriconazole were determined for 70 isolates of Candida spp. Our results demonstrated a higher interlaboratory agreement of VITEK 2 System than Sensititre YeastOne©. A good concordance b...

Cryptococcus gattii emerged in North America in 1999 as a human and veterinary pathogen on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The emergent subtype, VGIIa, and the closely related subtype VGIIb can now be found in the United States in Washington, Oregon, and California. We performed multilocus sequence typing and antifungal susceptibility testing on 43 isolates of C. gattii from human patients ...

The presentation of protein antigens on the cell surface by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules coordinates vertebrate adaptive immune responses, thereby mediating susceptibility to a variety of autoimmune and infectious diseases. The composition of symbiotic microbial communities (the microbiota) is influenced by host immunity and can have a profound impact on host physiology. Her...

Susceptibilities to beta-lactam antibiotics of five VIM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were determined by broth microdilution, Etest, disk diffusion, and the automated systems Vitek 2, Phoenix, and MicroScan. Significant discrepancies were observed in the determination of susceptibility to imipenem and meropenem. Interpretation problems by the automated systems were also noted.

The "HACEK" organisms are a group of fastidious Gram-negative bacteria that cause a variety of infections, including infective endocarditis. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is not universally available, and therapy for these infections is often empirical. We report the antimicrobial susceptibilities of 70 clinical HACEK isolates to 18 antimicrobials. All isolates were susceptible to ceftri...

BACKGROUND Intrapartum chemoprophylaxis for group B streptococcus (GBS) carriers reduces the risk of early-onset neonatal GBS infection. For women with β-lactam allergy, either erythromycin or clindamycin are administered. Recent reports worldwide suggest that GBS resistance to these antibiotics is increasing. AIMS To compare erythromycin and clindamycin resistance phenotypes in invasive neon...

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti-microbial resistance in intubated patients in intensive care unit (ICU) of Bahonar hospital in Kerman province, Iran during the year 2008. Tracheal samples were obtained from 111 intubated patients in the ICU by broncoalveolar lavage method. Amikacin, Ceftazidim and Imipenem were used to evaluate antibiotic susceptibility. For ...

Bacterial antibiotic resistance is one of the major concerns of modern healthcare worldwide, and the development of rapid, growth-based, antimicrobial susceptibility tests is key for addressing it. The cover image shows a self-assembled asynchronous magnetic bead rotation (AMBR) biosensor developed for rapid detection of bacterial growth. Using the biosensors, the minimum inhibitory concentrati...

The prevalence of Escherichia coli O157 associated with feedlot cattle in Saskatchewan was determined in a 10-month longitudinal study (3 feedlots) and a point prevalence study (20 feedlots). The prevalence of E. coli O157 at the three different sites in the horizontal study varied from 2.5 to 45%. The point prevalence of E. coli O157 among Saskatchewan cattle from 20 different feedlots ranged ...

Surveillance data on the level of resistant bacteria is needed to inform strategies to reduce the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the non-susceptibility trends to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems among Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. isolates from the district of Nashik in Western India during the period 2004-2014. Ant...
