Antibiotics are frequently prescribed in the older person, the dosification needs special care, since the pharmacokinetic parameters changes with aging and the side effects can be different in the older person. The creatinine clearance changes and we must modify the way we prescribe such antibiotics to the elderly, calculating. The variety of antibiotics now available led us to consider this pa...
INTRODUCTION The main mechanism of emerging resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter sp. isolates is the production of metallo-β-lactamases (MβLs). MβLs are enzymes capable of hydrolyzing cephalosporins, penicillins and carbapenems, but not monobactams (aztreonam), which are often used as antimicrobial therapy to treat nosocomial infections. METHODS An observational descriptive ...
The behavioural and electrocortical effects of two monobactam derivatives were studied after intraperitoneal (ip) administration in DBA/2 mice, a strain genetically susceptible to sound-induced seizures, and in C57 and Swiss mice, two strains not prone to seizure. DBA/2 mice were more susceptible than Swiss and C57 mice to seizures induced by aztreonam or carumonam. No significant differences w...
Here we report the systematic study of the anti-trypanocidal activity of some new products derived from S. diastatus on 14 different T. cruzi strains spanning the six genetic lineages of T. cruzi. As the traditional growth inhibition curves giving similar IC(50) showed great differences on antibiotic and lineage tested, we decided to preserve the wealth of information derived from each inhibiti...
64 Rev Esp Quimioter 2010;23(2):100-102 The class B metallo carbapenem-hydrolyzing ß lactamases (MBLs) are enzymes of great concern because they possess activity against all ß -lactams, except monobactams. Up to now, several members of this family of enzymes have been described (IMP, VIM, SPM-1, GIM-1, SIM-1). Most of VIM and IMP genes usually reside within class 1 integrons as gene cassettes. ...
Bacterial infections caused by members of the genus Aeromonas, with a relatively high antibiotic resistance, are among the most common and troublesome diseases of fish raised in ponds with recirculation systems. In this study, carried out at an experimental aquaculture station in northern Portugal, 51 strains identified as belonging to the genus Aeromonas were isolated from 20 rainbow trout (On...
The blaIMP gene coding for the IMP-1 metallo-beta-lactamase produced by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolate (isolate 101/1477) was overexpressed via a T7 expression system in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3), and its product was purified to homogeneity with a final yield of 35 mg/liter of culture. The structural and functional properties of the enzyme purified from E. coli were identical to th...
A synthesis of several carbapenem antibiotics including 9-methoxythienamycin is described. The final deprotection of C-3 esters was accomplished by a novel procedure using aluminum trichloride under a very mild condition. The antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria is shown.
