Despite the increasing interest in twin studies and the stunning amount of research on face recognition, the ability of adult identical twins to discriminate their own faces from those of their co-twins has been scarcely investigated. One's own face is the most distinctive feature of the bodily self, and people typically show a clear advantage in recognizing their own face even more than other ...

Williams & Blangero (1999) derived closed form expressions for the power of a univariate variance components test of linkage for a variety of pedigree structures. We have extended their results by investigating the effect of including monozygotic twins in the design on the power to detect linkage. Specifically, we determined the power associated with a pedigree of size three, where individuals ...

Corneal endothelial cell density was measured in normal subjects and in a group of monozygotic and dizygotic twins. Cell density was found to decline with age and to be similar in right and left eyes in normal subjects. Both monozygotic and dizygotic twins were found to have very similar mean endothelial cells densities and particularly so in like-sided eyes.

PURPOSE The concordance of strabismic phenotypes was examined in monozygotic versus multizygotic twins and other multiple births to study the role of genetic background in different types of commitant strabismus. METHODS Medical charts of 45 consecutive pairs of twins (16 monozygotic and 18 dizygotic twins, and 11 with unknown zygosity), 3 sets of triplets (one monozygotic and 2 trizygotic tr...

The exploration of copy-number variation (CNV), notably of somatic cells, is an understudied aspect of genome biology. Any differences in the genetic makeup between twins derived from the same zygote represent an irrefutable example of somatic mosaicism. We studied 19 pairs of monozygotic twins with either concordant or discordant phenotype by using two platforms for genome-wide CNV analyses an...

Palatal rugae patterns are anatomic structures considered unique to each person. Monozygotic twins present similarities, however, Rugoscopy in particular, may contribute to their individualization for forensic purposes. The aims of this study were: to study the palatal rugae classifications of Briñón; to propose improvements to facilitate use of this method, if pertinent; and to characterize pa...

This paper examines why parents of twins or adult twins themselves request zygosity testing. Of 405 multiples including 8 sets of triplets, the majority (93%) were monozygotic. Age of testing ranged from 0 days to 73 years. About 50% of requests came from parents or twins who were curious about, or expressed a need to be certain of, their zygosity. Other reasons included health concerns (curren...

Previous research has provided evidence for a genetic effect in monozygotic twinning, indicated by an increased risk for monozygotic women to have monozygotic offspring. However, since the biological mechanism for this trait is unknown, it is not clear if there exists a paternal inheritance. In this study we investigated twin pregnancies in offspring born in 1941-1996 to male twins in the Swedi...

The occurrence of leukemia in twins is rare but has a crucial implication in the genetic research of leukemia. This report presents 2 pairs of monozygotic twins with precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL)-AF4 fusion genes were found in the twin sisters. This study is the first to report on infant ALL harboring the 46,XY, -4, +10, -13, del(14)(q24), -15, +2ma...

The rate of Helicobacter pylori infection is inversely related to socioeconomic status, and childhood is thought to be the major acquisition period. The authors investigated the importance of childhood environment in the acquisition of H. pylori infection. A cross-sectional study was conducted of monozygotic and dizygotic twins who were reared apart or reared together. Three hundred twins from ...
