BACKGROUND Conduction defects complicating acute myocardial infarction (MI) are frequent and associated with increased mortality and complications. Common conduction defects after acute MI are atrioventricular nodal blocks (1st, 2nd and 3rd degree) and intraventricular conduction defects (right or left bundle branch blocks and hemiblocks). In myocardial infarction occlusion of coronary arteries...
Mice lacking Kv1.1 Shaker-like potassium channels encoded by the Kcna1 gene exhibit severe seizures and die prematurely. The channel is widely expressed in brain but only minimally, if at all, in mouse myocardium. To test whether Kv1.1-potassium deficiency could underlie primary neurogenic cardiac dysfunction, we performed simultaneous video EEG-ECG recordings and found that Kcna1-null mice dis...
Central motor conduction to small hand muscles was measured using magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex and electrical stimulation of proximal motor roots in 11 patients with Friedreich's ataxia, 10 patients with early onset cerebellar ataxia with retained tendon reflexes (EOCA) and 13 patients with late onset degenerative cerebellar disease (LOCD). Central motor conduction was abnormal in 9...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE shock waves are defined as a sequence of single sonic pulses largely used in the treatment of bone and tendon diseases and recently on muscular hypertonia in stroke patients. Our purpose is to investigate the short and long term effect of extra-corporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on the peripheral nerve conduction and central conductions from the treated muscles in normal...
Nerve conduction studies are an essential part of the work-up of peripheral neuropathies. Many neuropathic syndromes can be suspected on clinical grounds, but optimal use of nerve conduction study techniques (in combination with needle electromyography) allows diagnostic classification and is therefore crucial to understanding and separation of neuropathies. Multifocal motor neuropathy, for exa...
Comprehensive electrophysiological studies were performed on 13 patients with arsenic neuropathy. The most prominent finding was a marked abnormality in sensory nerve conduction in the presence of moderate abnormalities in motor nerve conduction. The motor nerve conduction studies and needle EMG were typical of those seen in axonal degeneration which was confirmed by sural nerve biopsy.
Thirty-one chronic alcoholic patients were investigated using quantitative electrophysiological techniques. Estimates of the numbers of functioning motor units in the extensor digitorum brevis muscles and measurements of the parameters of the potentials of these units are presented along with the values for motor nerve conduction velocities in the innervating lateral popliteal nerves. Motor con...
Conduction velocity from spinal cord to axilla (estimated using the F wave) has been compared with conduction velocity from axilla to wrist (measured in the conventional manner) in the motor fibres of the ulnar nerve in 17 controls subjects and in 11 patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In the patients with GBS the conduction velocity was, in general reduced to a similar extent in b...
