Two TTX-resistant sodium channels, SNS and NaN, are preferentially expressed in c-type dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and have been shown recently to have distinct electrophysiological signatures, SNS producing a slowly inactivating and NaN producing a persistent sodium current with a relatively hyperpolarized voltage-dependence. An attenuation of SNS and NaN transcripts has been demonstrat...

This chapter overviews the current state of the emerging discipline of DNA nanorobotics that make use of synthetic DNA to self-assemble operational molecular-scale devices. Recently there have been a series of quite astonishing experimental results which have taken the technology from a state of intriguing possibilities into demonstrated capabilities of quickly increasing scale and complexity. ...

Schema: Many applications of knowledge discovery require the knowledge to be consistent with data. Examples include discovering rules for query optimization, database integration, decision support, etc. However, databases usually change over time and make machine-discovered knowledge inconsistent with data. Useful knowledge should be robust against database changes so that it is unlikely to bec...

The colonic migrating motor complex (CMMC) is necessary for fecal pellet propulsion in the murine colon. We have previously shown that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) released from enterochromaffin cells activates 5-HT(3) receptors on the mucosal processes of myenteric Dogiel type II neurons to initiate the events underlying the CMMC. Our aims were to further investigate the roles of 5-HT(1A), 5-HT(...

In this paper we analyse the architecture and technologies for monitoring the Neighbourhood Area Network (NAN) of the Smart Grid. We consider the role of sensor networks in providing information about the environment of the NAN, for example to monitor temperature and movement of vehicles and people, which can provide useful information about changes in the loading of the NAN. The two main contr...

At the request of the membership, and at the direction of the President, Dr. Barbara Uzzell, and the Board of Directors (BoD), the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN) Policy and Planning Committee has developed the following 2001 Definition of a Clinical Neuropsy chologist, as part of NAN's White Paper series on Professional Policy and Practice. The entire NAN membership has had an oppor...

In this paper, three studies of Min-Nan speech processing are presented. The first study concerns the implementation of a high-performance Min-Nan TTS system. On the basis of the waveform templates of 877 base-syllables used as basic synthesis units and through the application of the RNN-based prosody generation method and the PSOLA algorithm for prosody modification, this Min-Nan TTS system ca...

We studied the effects of serotonin (5-HT) on intrinsic and synaptic responses of hippocampal CA1 cells. The effects were partially mimicked by the 5-HT1A receptor agonist, 8-OH-DPAT, and prevented by the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, NAN-190. Polysynaptic fast and slow inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) were reduced in amplitude by 60-70% following application of both 5-HT and 8-OH-DPAT....
