One of the big challenges of the 21st century is the utilization of nanotechnology for energy technology. Nanoscale structures may provide novel functionality, which has been demonstrated most convincingly by successful applications such as dye-sensitized solar cells introduced by M. Grätzel. Applications in energy technology are based on the transfer and conversion of energy. Following the exa...

Detailed studies of the magnetoresistance of α-(ET)2KHg(SCN)4 and α(ET)2TlHg(SCN)4 as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength, and field orientation are reported. Below 15 K, the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance is metallic (dR/dT > 0) for magnetic field orientation corresponding to an angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO) minimum and nonmetallic (dR/d...

Structural ordering is widely present in molecules and materials. However, the organization of molecules on the curved surface of nanoparticles is still the least understood owing to the major limitations of the current surface characterization tools. By the merits of x-ray crystallography, we reveal the structural ordering at all scales in a super robust 133-gold atom nanoparticle protected by...

On the basis of density functional theory, stability and electronic structure of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in surface modified diamond have been studied. Surface decoration is traditionally expected to only have influence on those NV centers close to the surface. However, our calculations indicate that its effect to charged NV centers is nondecaying and long-range, where the formation energ...

Chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is the main route to produce the mass graphene-based materials with tailored surface chemistry and functions. However, the toxic reducing circumstances, multiple steps, and even incomplete removal of the oxygen-containing groups were involved, and the produced graphenes existed usually as the assembly-absent precipitates. Herein, a substrate-assisted re...

Abstract Polaritonic modes in low-dimensional materials enable strong light–matter interactions and the manipulation of light on nanometer length scales. Very recently, a new class polaritons has attracted considerable interest nanophotonics: image van der Waals crystals, manifesting when polaritonic material is close proximity to highly conductive metal, so that mode couples with its mirror im...

The design of high-temperature ferrimagnetic materials is highly demanded for next-generation functional spintronic devices. Here, we propose that the combination nonmetallic structural units and magnetic atoms an effective way to achieve magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials. predicted $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{P}}_{4}$ monolayer, consisting quasisquare ${\mathrm{P}}_{4}$ units, shows intrins...

We discovered a highly reactive λ(3)-hypervalent iodane species using an inorganic/organic base for the unorthodox synthesis of amides and ketoesters through grafting terminal alkynes. In contrast to the metal-catalyzed dehydrative approaches the in situ generated nonmetallic reagent efficiently created C-N/C-O and C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds with amines/alkynes and water at rt.

A short synthetic approach was developed for the synthesis of a common trisaccharide core found in kankanose, kankanoside F, H1, H2, and I isolated from the medicinally active plant Cistanche tubulosa. All glycosylations were carried out under nonmetallic reaction conditions. Yields were very good in all intermediate steps.
