Fifty-four patients with rheumatoid arthritis and severe osteomalacia were found to have considerable bone and general deficiency problems. In 46 of them 14 stress fractures occurred and 32 minimal trauma fractures necessitating admission to hospital. Radiological abnormalities of absorption were found in nearly 25% of the total, implying that dietary factors alone are not always responsible fo...

Oncogenic osteomalacia (OO) is an uncommon but treatable cause of osteomalacia related to tumor production of FGF23, usually caused by benign mesenchymal neoplasms. Paranasal sinus glomangiomas are a rare cause of OO, with only one previously reported case. Here we describe a second case (first reported in English) of paranasal sinus glomangioma-induced osteomalacia in a 42-year-old man. He pre...

OSTEOMALACIA and osteoporosis are still sometimes confused because both diseases lead to a deficiency of calcium which can be detected on radiographs of the skeleton. This lack of calcium is the only feature common to the two diseases which are in all other ways easily distinguishable. Osteomalacia Osteomalacia will be discussed first, because it is a clearly defined disease which can be cured....

BACKGROUND Osteomalacia is now a rare disease in dialysis patients in developed countries since the withdrawal of aluminium overload. The involvement of fluoride and strontium in the pathogenesis of the disease has been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between osteomalacia in dialysis patients and the fluoride or strontium contents of bone. METHODS Of...

A slight modification in tissue processing and staining technique enables a previously described method for staining aluminium to be used to demonstrate aluminium in osteomalacia associated with haemodialysis. The stain appears to be accurate in diagnosing this condition and may assist in establishing the diagnosis before severe osteomalacia develops.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is caused by a small mesenchymal tumour characterised by phosphaturia, hypophosphatemia, decreased serum vitamin D3 level, and osteomalacia. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour of the mixed connective tissue type (PMTMCT) is the commonest subtype and usually involves a single site. We report a case of PMTMCT involving the left proximal and shaft of the tibia in a 42-year-old ...

BACKGROUND Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an immune-mediated chronic cholestatic liver disease, characterized by increased concentrations of serum IgM and the presence of circulating anti-mitochondrial antibodies. Although bone diseases such as osteoporosis or osteodystrophy are commonly associated with PBC, osteomalacia which is caused by abnormal vitamin D metabolism, mineralization defec...

Severe osteomalacia (confirmed by the examination of thin undecalcified bone biopsy sections) associated with hypophosphataemia developed in a 60 year old woman. A skeletal x-ray survey showed a lytic lesion in the right proximal femur, and this was curetted, showing a vascular tumour. The patient's symptoms improved almost immediately and serum phosphate concentrations returned to normal. Some...
