BACKGROUND We hypothesized that higher body mass index (BMI) was associated with increased prevalence of paranasal sinus disease and examined the hypothesis in Japanese adults. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study including 1350 Japanese adults aged 40 years or more who participated in a health check-up program focusing on brain diseases and metabolic syndrome. Participants were divided i...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate by computed tomographic scanning the paranasal mucosal changes of coal workers with and without pneumoconiosis. METHODS Examination of images and scores from paranasal computed tomographic scans. The study participants were 26 coal workers with pneumoconiosis, 29 coal workers without pneumoconiosis, and 20 controls. All were men. The extent and patterns of inflammatory p...
Background: Diagnosis of active pulmonary and paranasal involvement in patients with Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) can be difficult. The diagnostic value of gallium-67 scintigraphy in WG is unclear. Objective: To evaluate the added diagnostic value of gallium-67 scintigraphy in patients with WG with suspected granulomatous inflammation in the paranasal and chest regions. Methods: Retrospectivel...
Background and Objective: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common chronic diseases. In the past decades, there has been an increase in fungal infections of sinuses and fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) has been diagnosed more frequently. Knowing the fungal flora and its prevalence in CRS patients will allow a better understanding of this disease, permitting a correct diagnosis, trea...

OBJECTIVE Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) related sclerosing disease (RSD) of the paranasal sinuses is a rare lesion of dense lymphoplasmacytic tissue, with a high proportion of IgG4+ plasma cells. We presented a rare case of IgG4-RSD with isolated involvement of the paranasal sinuses in the absence of multiorgan involvement. METHODS A case report and comprehensive literature review. RESULTS To ou...
Introduction: Nasal polyps are pedunculated, edematous, prolapsed mucosa of the paranasal sinuses. These polyps commonly arise around the ostia of the paranasal sinuses in the middle meatus. Discussion: The commonest sites of polyp formation are the ethmoid sinuses and maxillary sinus. Rarely polyps may also arise from the other paranasal sinuses. Sites in the nasal mucosa other than the parana...
Between November 2010 and December 2011, a certified radiologist retrospectively reviewed 510 computed tomographic images of the paranasal sinuses ordered by otolaryngologists at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital. Medical records, endoscopic nasal examinations, MRC size, and cyst: sinus size ratios were evaluated in patients with MRCs. The prevalence and characteristics of MRCs in the pa...
Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a malignant neoplasm that tends to follow a benign clinical course. Recurrences are uncommon. We report a case of recurrent PLGA of the paranasal sinuses that manifested as a large mass that filled the entire nasal cavity and left maxillary sinus. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a recurrent PLGA of the paranasal sinuses.
