Ground water in karst terrains is highly vulnerable to contamination due to the rapid transport of contaminants through the highly conductive conduit system. For contamination risk assessment purposes, information about hydraulic and geometric characteristics of the conduits and their hydraulic interaction with the fissured porous rock is an important prerequisite. The relationship between aqui...
In this issue of JCHIMP, Meade et al., publish the results of qualitative analysis regarding a second-year rotation in tracing the outcome of discharged patients. They report that their residents develop remarkable insights into the types of failures and miscommunications that plague our discharge processes. This perspective piece places this article in the context of literature seeking to unde...
'IpHREE years ago, on July 1, the whole of the powers and. duties of the Local Government Board, the Insurance Commissioners of England and Wales, various health duties hitherto discharged by the Home Office and the Board of Education as specified in the Act, together with certain powers of the Privy Council, were transferred to the Ministry of Health. But in years past far-sighted men like the...
All patients discharged from a medical ward during four months were randomly assigned to one of two groups. In one group the patients were given their interim discharge summary for delivery to their general practitioner by hand; in the other group the summary was posted by the hospital. Of the 289 summaries sent by either method, 279 (97%) arrived at the general practitioner's surgery. A mean (...
Lactarius rubriviridis sp. nov., characterized by hypogeous, sequestrate basidiomes with red latex, green stains, and forcibly discharged, reticulate basidiospores is described and illustrated. During the Spring, the new species forms basidiomes associated with conifers at 1400-1800 m elevation in the Sierra Nevada, and is known from two specimens collected 19 yr apart. Comparisons with the put...
The re-admission rates of a cohort of 97 elderly patients discharged from hospital were ascertained. The overall re-admission rate at 30 days was 15%, at 90 days 24% and at 180 days, 30%. On 4 occasions (9%) re-admission was deemed avoidable by the general practitioner. Deterioration of existing disease accounted for 16 (36%) and a new medical event for 22 (49%) re-admissions.
Agent interaction protocols are usually specified in terms of permissible sequences of messages. This representation is, unfortunately, brittle and does not allow for flexibility and robustness. The commitment machines framework of Yolum and Singh aims to provide more flexibility and robustness by defining interactions in terms of the commitments of agents. In this thesis we identify a number o...
Although between 80 and 85 per cent. of the cases treated in this hospital by fixation and natural helio-therapy were discharged quiescent, it was felt that artificial light might secure (1) a greater percentage of 'recoveries' (2) a reduction in the time required to attain 'recovery'; (3) an amelioration in the condition of advanced and complicated cases which had failed to respond to open-air...
grammes that have led to improved asthma management are thought to be involved in this change; the impact of other (environmental) factors is more difficult to evaluate. A similar steadily decreasing trend was not found, however, in the percentage of men discharged during service as a result of asthma, which points to a need to re-examine selection and classification criteria for asthmatic men ...
