One- and two-photon stimulated emission transitions were investigated by the fluorescence quenching of a sulfonyl-containing fluorene compound, 2,7-bis(4-(phenylsulfonyl)styryl)-9,9-didecyl-9H-fluorene (1), in solution at room temperature using a picosecond pump-probe technique. The nature of stimulated transitions under various fluorescence excitation and quenching conditions was analyzed theo...

The human body literally glimmers. The intensity of the light emitted by the body is 1000 times lower than the sensitivity of our naked eyes. Ultraweak photon emission is known as the energy released as light through the changes in energy metabolism. We successfully imaged the diurnal change of this ultraweak photon emission with an improved highly sensitive imaging system using cryogenic charg...

6MAP is a fluorescent analogue of adenine that undergoes Watson-Crick base pairing and base stacking in double-stranded DNA. The one-photon absorption spectrum of 6MAP is characterized by a maximum around 330 nm with moderate quantum yield fluorescence centered at about 420 nm. To take advantage of this probe for confocal and single-molecule microscopy, it would be advantageous to be able to ex...

We report fluorescence imaging of single dye molecules on a glass substrate by two-photon excitation with femtosecond pulses from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The single-molecule images exhibit a high signal to background ratio (>30:1) and a high spatial resolution (fwhm < /3). A quadratic intensity dependence of single-molecule emission rate is experimentally verified, and single-molecule ...

An intense single-mode correlated-spontaneous-emission laser or maser can be realized by driving the active atoms coherently with an injected external field. The scheme involves single-photon transitions unlike the two-photon or quantum-beat correlated-emission lasers that utilize correlations between successive photon-cascade emissions or between simultaneous emissions into two modes of the fi...

We use the semi-analytical program RCFORGV to evaluate radiative corrections to one-photon radiative emission in the high-energy scattering of pions in the Coulomb field of a nucleus with atomic number Z. It is shown that radiative corrections can simulate a pion polarizability effect. The average effect is α π = −β π = (0.20±0.05)×10cm, for pion energies 40-600 GeV. We also study the range of ...

This Letter theoretically discusses the photon emission spectra of a superconducting p-n junction. On the basis of the second order perturbation theory for electron-photon interaction, we show that the recombination of a Cooper pair with two p-type carriers causes enhancement of the luminescence intensity. The calculated results of photon emission spectra explain characteristic features of obse...

The emission rate of photons from a hot, weakly coupled ultrarelativistic plasma is analyzed. Leading-log results, reflecting the sensitivity of the emission rate to scattering events with momentum transfers from gT to T , have previously been obtained. But a complete leading-order treatment requires including collinearly enhanced, inelastic processes such as bremsstrahlung. These inelastic pro...

Generalized Einstein B coefficients for coherently driven closed three-level systems are introduced by means of the quantum-jump technique. The nonreciprocity between stimulated emission and absorption for both one-photon and two-photon gain and loss processes has been studied and quantified in terms of the rates of the particular incoherent processes present in each three-level system. Some ge...

Photon upconversion has the potential to increase the efficiency of single bandgap solar cells beyond the Shockley Queisser limit. Efficient light management is an important point in this context. Here we demonstrate that the direction of upconverted emission can be controlled in a reversible way, by embedding anthracene derivatives together with palladium porphyrin in a liquid crystalline matr...
