We fabricated and characterized InGaAsP photonic crystal nanocavities. By carefully tailoring the structural parameters, both an efficient coupling and a suitable Q-factor can be achieved. Depending on the design of the coupling region, sharp Fano lines may be observed. In this article, we investigate how the photonic band gaps and the variety of band dispersions of photonic crystals can be utilized for various applications and how they further give rise to completely novel optical phenomena. The enhancement of spontaneous emission through coupled cavity waveguides in a one-dimensional silicon nitride photonic microcrystal is investigated. We then present the ...

In this paper, the properties of the defect mode in the photonic band gap ofone-dimensional ternary photonic crystals containing high temperature superconductorlayer (SPCs) have been theoretically investigated. We considered the quasi-periodiclayered structures by choosing two order of ternary Thue-Morse structures with mirrorsymmetry. We investigated the transmission spectra of these structure...

Photonic crystals are materials that exhibit periodicities in their refractive index on the order of the wavelength of light, and thus provide many interesting possibilities for “photon management”. Applications for photonic crystals include light bending, inhibition of spontaneous emission, and amplified photon absorption or emission. A major limitation, however, for the incorporation of photo...

Photonic crystals have demonstrated potential for application in many fields and devices. We demonstrate practical fabrication of three-dimensional photonic crystals using the glancing angle deposition thin film fabrication technique. Optical characterization provides strong evidence for the existence of a complete photonic band gap in three dimensions, centered at 1.6 m. We also investigate th...

Dielectric reflectors that are periodic in one or two dimensions, also known as 1D and 2D photonic crystals, have been widely studied for many potential applications due to the presence of wavelength-tunable photonic bandgaps. However, the unique optical behavior of photonic crystals is based on theoretical models of perfect analogues. Little is known about the practical effects of dielectric i...

Monodisperse aqueous emulsion droplets encapsulating colloidal particles were produced in the oil phase, and controlled microwave irradiation of the aqueous drop phase created spherical colloidal crystals by so-called evaporation-induced self-organization of the colloidal particles. Unlike usual colloidal crystals, colloidal crystals in spherical symmetry (or photonic balls) possessed photonic ...

Linear waveguides in photonic-crystal slabs, two-dimensionally periodic dielectric structures of finite height, are fundamentally different from waveguides in two-dimensional photonic crystals. The most important distinctions arise from the fact that photonic-crystal slab waveguides must be index-confined in the vertical direction ~while a band gap confines them horizontally!. We present a syst...

Three dimensional silica photonic crystals with the gyroid minimal surface structure have been synthesized. The butterfly Callophrys rubi was used as a biotemplate. This material represents a significant addition to the small family of synthetic bicontinuous photonic crystals.

A suspension of monodisperse colloids has an interesting property of selfassembling into a three-dimensional ordered structure. This crystalline material has attracted significant interest on the implementation of photonic crystals, which have practical applications in reflectors, filters, resonators, and waveguides. In this thesis, self-assembly of colloidal crystals and photonic crystal techn...
