We study nonlinear propagation of surface plasmon polaritons along an interface between metal and nonlinear Kerr dielectric. We demonstrate numerically self-focusing of a plasmon beam at large powers and the formation of slowly decaying spatial soliton in the presence of losses. We develop an analytical model for describing the evolution of spatial plasmon-solitons and observe a good agreement ...
We investigate electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered metal-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs). We demonstrate that high-k propagating waves in HMMs are volume plasmon polaritons. The volume plasmon polariton band is formed by coupling of short-range surface plasmon polariton excitations in the individual metal layers.
The determination of the thickness and dielectric constant of thin dielectric layers by means of surface plasmon resonance is discussed. It appears to be impossible to determine these parameters from one surface plasmon response experiment. This is illustrated theoretically. Variation of the refractive index of the solution in which surface plasmon experiments were performed allowed us to deter...
In this paper, the plasmon coupling effect between two gold nanospheres on a gold slab is investigated. At plasmon resonance frequencies, electrons on the surface of the slab are absorbed into spheres and contribute to plasmon oscillation. This effect can enhance the local electric field and optical coupling force between the two spheres.
We develop a semiclassical theory for the long range excitation of plasmon resonances in atomic clusters, based on the doorway hypothesis. The effect of the width of the plasmon resonance is fully taken into account. As an application we study plasmon excitation in small Sodium clusters, in collisions with electrons and protons.
Scaling, coherence, and amplification of a subwavelength surface plasmon micropillar optical cavity have been studied using 3-D finite-difference time-domain calculations. Two experiments have also been conducted for the demonstration of the gain-assisted propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in a planar metal–semiconductor waveguide and the enhancement of the cavity-Q factor in a subwavele...

We report on the fabrication and investigation of the plasmon excitations in laterally confined quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Ag nanodisks on a Si(111) substrate. Different from the Mie resonance in Ag clusters and the propagating plasmon waves in 2D systems, these ultrathin nanodisks exhibit a low-energy plasmon resonance whose frequency is continuously tunable by the disk diameter. Quantum-mecha...
We show that spoof surface plasmons can be used to control the reflection of terahertz radiation at the output facet of a parallel-plate waveguide. Using a periodic groove pattern on the output face, reflectivity approaching 100% can be achieved within a limited spectral range. Unlike the conventional geometry for plasmon-enhanced transmission, this approach enables a unique method for studying...
The optical properties of metals arise both from optical excitation of interband transitions and their collective electronic, or plasmon, response. Here, we examine the optical properties of Cu, whose strong interband transitions dominate its optical response in the visible region of the spectrum, in a nanoshell geometry. This nanostructure permits the geometrical tuning of the nanoparticle pla...
