This paper introduces a smart textile for posture classification. A distributed sensing and processing architecture is implemented into a loose fitting long sleeve shirt. Standardized interfaces to remote periphery support the variable placement of different sensor modalities at any location of the textile. The shirt is equipped with acceleration sensors in order to determine the postural resol...

With the increasing complexity of humanoid mechanisms and their desired capabilities, there is a pressing need for a generalized framework where a desired whole-body motion behavior can be easily specified and controlled. Our hypothesis is that human motion results from simultaneously performing multiple objectives in a hierarchical manner, and we have analogously developed a prioritized, multi...

In this paper, a new scheme for the simulation of tactical communications systems is introduced where the mobility, call and availability patterns for the communications equipment are generated by using the data inferred from the joint theater level battle simulations. In this technique, the mobility, strength and posture data related to military units are stored in a database by a military con...

I n this paper. we present the mechanism, system cor$guration, basic control algorithm and integrated ,functions of the Nonda humanoid robot. Like its human counterpart, this robot lzas the ability to move forward and backward, sideways to the right or the left, as well as diagonally. I n addition, the robot can turn in any direction, walk up and down stairs continuously. Furthermore, due to it...

This position paper describes a vision of how Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) situation awareness and threat assessment can benefit from the use of GestureDirected Sensor-Information Fusion (GDSIF). It describes a concept of operations for the war fighter’s use of electronic wireless-communication gloves (eGloves) to communicate, plan, and react while wearing Mission-Oriente...

In this paper, we introduce a Tai Chi training system based on Microsoft’s Kinect, which automatically evaluates a user’s performance and provides real-time feedback for the user to refine his current posture. A novel method to measure posture is also described. The experimental results are promising, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach.

This paper presents a toolbox of gestural control mechanisms which are available when the input sensing apparatus is a pair of data gloves fitted with orientation sensors. The toolbox was developed in advance of a live music performance in which the mapping from gestural input to audio output was to be developed rapidly in collaboration with the performer. The paper begins with an introduction ...

This paper deals with objective analysis of the singing voice, and aims at giving non-professional singers both an aid to improve their voice capabilities and a criterion to prevent a wrong vocal attitude (head, neck, and body posture) that could even cause vocal pathologies. A new standalone application with a user-friendly interface is proposed, for robust and reliable analysis of singing voi...

This paper describes environment maps that are comprised of the following three types of information, 1) 3D environmental changes that represents human activities, 2) human trajectories in 2D that represent how humans move in the environment, and 3) human posture data. These maps are utilized in order to plan safer, quicker and/or non-human-disturbing paths for a mobile service robot at the mus...

In humans, maintaining body posture is a basis for many activities such as standing, walking or reaching. Human posture control involves multi-sensory integration mainly of joint angle, joint torque, vestibular and visual inputs. This integration provides humans with high flexibility and with robustness in terms of failsafety. Roboticists may draw inspirations from the human control methods whe...
