In this article we study bases for projective monomial curves and the relationship between the basis and the set of generators for the defining ideal of the curve. We understand this relationship best for curves in P and for curves defined by an arithmetic progression. We are able to prove that the latter are set theoretic complete intersections.
We pose a conjecture for the expected number of generators of the ideal of the union C of s general rational irreducible curves in P r. By using the computer we prove the conjecture for C of low degree d (e.g. if s = 1 for d 80 and if s 10 for d 40).
Here we give upper bounds for the degrees of generators of the homogeneous ideal of a suitable unreduced scheme Z ⊂ P n. Here we take as Z a disjoint union of fat points or of multiple structures on linear subspaces or we take as Zred a subscheme of a smooth curve or a scroll. The actors in this paper are unreduced subschemes (or ”fattening”) of P n with connected components which are fattening...
let $mathcal{x}$ be a class of $r$-modules. in this paper, we investigate ;$mathcal{x}$-injective (projective) and dg-$mathcal{x}$-injective (projective) complexes which are generalizations of injective (projective) and dg-injective (projective) complexes. we prove that some known results can be extended to the class of ;$mathcal{x}$-injective (projective) and dg-$mathcal{x}$-injective ...
We study (slope-)stability properties of syzygy bundles on a projective space P given by ideal generators of a homogeneous primary ideal. In particular we give a combinatorial criterion for a monomial ideal to have a semistable syzygy bundle. Restriction theorems for semistable bundles yield the same stability results on the generic complete intersection curve. From this we deduce a numerical f...
The main result of the present article is a (practically optimal) criterium for the pseudoeffectivity of the twisted relative canonical bundles of surjective projective maps. Our theorem has several applications in algebraic geometry; to start with, we obtain the natural analytic generalization of some semipositivity results due to E. Viehweg and F. Campana. As a byproduct, we give a simple and...
In this handout we will briefly explore the topic of projective modules in a bit more detail than we covered in class. Throughout R is a commutative ring. Recall that, by definition, a projective module is an R-module that is a direct summand of a free R-module. As mentioned in class, if the ring R is decomposable, e.g., R = R1 ⊕R2 is a direct sum of rings, then there are many examples of non-f...
The construction of joins and secant varieties is studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. For ideals generated by quadratic monomials, the generators of the secant ideals are obstructions to graph colorings, and this leads to a commutative algebra version of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Given any projective variety and any term order, we explore whether the initial ideal o...
