Realistic microstructure-based calculations have recently become an important tool for a performance prediction of sound absorbing porous media, seemingly suitable also for a design and optimization of novel acoustic materials. However, the accuracy of such calculations strongly depends on a correct choice of the representative microstructural geometry of porous media, and that choice is constr...

The present work is an in-depth study of the connections between microstructural instabilities and their macroscopic manifestations—as captured through the effective properties—in finitely strained porous elastomers. The powerful second-order homogenization (SOH) technique initially developed for random media, is used for the first time here to study the onset of failure in periodic porous elas...

Microscopic structures of porous media are mainly reconstructed using physical experimental methods and numerical reconstruction methods. However, their accuracy is closely related to the resolution of real rock core images and polishing techniques of core chips amongst others, which significantly limit the development of micro-network flow simulation. In this paper, we proposed a new method fo...

Accurate determination of geometrical and physical properties of natural porous materials is notoriously difficult. Continuum multiscale modeling has provided carefully calibrated realistic microstructure models of reservoir rocks with floating point accuracy. Previous measurements using synthetic microcomputed tomography (μ-CT) were based on extrapolation of resolution-dependent properties for...

Bacterial migration is important in understanding many practical problems ranging from disease pathogenesis to the bioremediation of hazardous waste in the environment. Our laboratory has been successful in quantifying bacterial migration in fluid media through experiment and the use of population balance equations and cellular level simulations that incorporate parameters based on a fundamenta...

Recent progress that we have made on the problem of determining the effecttve properties of random heterogeneous media from the morphology is reviewed. A variety of different effective properties are considered, including the electrical conductivity and elastic moduli of composites, time scales associated with diffusion and reaction among traps, and fluid permeability of porous media. Studying ...

This paper provides a full numerical tool set for modeling and predicting an effective apparent dielectric constant of multiphase microporous media, which includes a multiparameter random generation-growth algorithm for generating microstructures of multiphase porous media and a lattice Boltzmann solver for the electric potential transport equations through porous structures. After being valida...

We show that the critical behavior of a colloid-polymer mixture inside a random porous matrix of quenched hard spheres belongs to the universality class of the random-field Ising model. We also demonstrate that random-field effects in colloid-polymer mixtures are surprisingly strong. This makes these systems attractive candidates to study random-field behavior experimentally.

this paper presents a simple yet powerful original approach for approximating dispersivity in porous media. the key to this approach is both use of least-squares criterion and image processing technique. two dimensional transparent models, including horizontal and vertical configurations, under different combinations of grain sizes and pore velocities, experimented. concentration data were obta...

pore network modeling uses a network of pores connected by throats to model the void space of a porous medium and tries to predict its various characteristics during multiphase flow of various fluids. in most cases, a non-realistic regular lattice of pores is used to model the characteristics of a porous medium. although some methodologies for extracting geologically realistic irregular network...
