Pyruvic acid and O-acetyl groups are the major noncarbohydrate substituents in exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by fast-growing species of Rhizobium. EPS substituent variations were observed among strains of the same species. The amounts of these substituents also varied with culture age; pyruvic acid increased in the EPS of all four species, whereas O-acetyl increased in Rhizobium trifolii an...
RosR is a transcriptional regulator important for determining cell-surface characteristics and nodulation competitiveness in Rhizobium etli CE3. We identified a 15-kb region that contains genes with similarity to members of the virB, virC, virG, and virE operons of Agrobacterium tumefaciens and demonstrated that RosR directly regulates one operon in this region. These genes were located on plas...
Fifty four bacterial strains were isolated from root nodules of the grain legumes Cicer arietinum, Lens esculentus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Pisum sativum, and Vicia faba grown in cultivated lands of Beni-Suef Governorate (Egypt). Repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) clustered the strains into 15 REP-PCR groups. The nearly complete sequence of the 16S rRNA gene fro...
Identification and Characterization of Metabolic Potential of Different Strains from Genus Rhizobium
Bacteria of the Rhizobium genus form a group microorganisms existing in environment two forms: symbiotic, root nodules Fabaceae sp. plants and free-living, saprophytic soil environment. The subject this study was genetic identification characterization metabolic activity different strains from bacteria. conducted on 16 bacteria collection Department Agricultural Microbiology, Institute Soil Sci...
Bacterial strains and growth conditions. Fast-growing soybean Rhizobium strains USDA 191, USDA 192, USDA 193, USDA 194, USDA 201, USDA 205, USDA 206, USDA 208, USDA 214, USDA 217, and USDA 257 were isolated from soil or nodules collected in the PRC (20). Slow-growing soybean rhizobium strains PRC 005, PRC 74, PRC 113-2, PRC121-6, PRC 2031, and PRC B15, were oHtained from T. S. Hu, Institute of ...
We compared the nodulation competitiveness of three strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum by counting the number of nodules formed on faba bean plants after the application at sowing time of different concentrations of the strains to soils already containing Rhizobium strains of the same species. A relationship of type y = ax was found to exist between the ratio of the nodules formed by the applie...
Congo red absorption is generally considered a contraindication of Rhizobium. However, R. leguminosarum takes up the dye on yeast extract-mannitol agar. The uptake of congo red varies among strains of R. leguminosarum, as shown elsewhere with strains of R. trifolii and R. meliloti. Congo red absorption does not distinguish rhizobia from other bacteria, but may be useful as a strain marker.
Francisella tularensis and related intracellular pathogens synthesize lipid A molecules that differ from their Escherichia coli counterparts. Although a functional orthologue of lpxK, the gene encoding the lipid A 4'-kinase, is present in Francisella, no 4'-phosphate moiety is attached to Francisella lipid A. We now demonstrate that a membrane-bound phosphatase present in Francisella novicida U...
Thirty-one cultures of Rhizobium leguminosarum were screened for effectiveness (C(2)H(2) reduction) on lentils (Lens esculenta). Fluorescent antibodies prepared against three of the most effective strains (Hawaii 5-0, Nitragin 92A3, and Nitragin 128A12) exhibited a high degree of strain specificity; the antibodies reacted strongly with their homologous rhizobia in culture and with bacteroids in...
Lipopolysaccharide somatic antigens isolated from two strains of Rhizobium trifolii showed the same electrophoretic mobility relative to each other as did the whole bacteria of these strains.
