This paper investigates the application of partially recurrent artificial neural networks (ANN) in the flow estimation for São Francisco River that feeds the hydroelectric power plant of Sobradinho. An Elman neural network was used suitably arranged to receive samples of the flow time series data available for São Francisco River shifted by one month. For that, the neural network input had a de...

Quantitative estimates of land-level change during the AD1700 giant Cascadia earthquake along the Oregon coastline are inferred from relative sea-level changes reconstructed from fossil foraminiferal assemblages preserved within the stratigraphic record. We apply a transfer functions based upon a regional training set of surface sediment samples from estuaries along the Oregon coast. The transf...

Floodplains play a key role in the ecology of the Upper Mississippi River; however, humans have significantly affected the ecological function of floodplains by isolating them from the main stem of the river with levees. Impoundment and channel training within the main stem also influence floodplain function by altering the flow of water through the system. Because of the key role hydrology pla...

River systems in remote environments are often challenging to monitor and understand where traditional gauging apparatus are difficult to install or where safety concerns prohibit field measurements. In such cases, remote sensing, especially terrestrial time-lapse imaging platforms, offer a means to better understand these fluvial systems. One such environment is found at the proglacial Isortoq...

A methodology based on adaptive ANN models is proposed for flood routing in river systems. The proposed methodology is capable of modeling both converging and diverging river networks. A Multilayer Perceptron Network (MLP), a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), a Time Delay Neural Network (TDNN) and a Time Delay Recurrent Neural Network (TDRNN) are applied in this study. An Adaptive training proced...

In large rivers, complex sediment dynamics cause rapid changes in the position and shape of bed deposits. Regular monitoring of changes in river bed geometry is essential for assessing the nature of morphological change and associated bed load during low, high, and medium flow conditions. We demonstrate the application of Direct Sampling (DS) for patching partial river morphological surveys to ...

Ross River virus, a mosquitoborne alphavirus, causes epidemic polyarthritis in Australia and the Pacific region. We analyzed serum cytokine, chemokine, and growth factor levels in travelers returning to Germany from Australia. Serum samples showed elevated concentrations in the acute phase of the illness and, more pronounced, in the long-lasting convalescent phase.

Ross River virus (RRV) is the most common mosquitoborne disease notified within Australia and is a significant public health issue for NSW. There have been more than 7500 notifications of RRV in NSW over the past 10 years. Peak seasons occurred in 1996–97 (1547 notified cases) and 2005–06 (1268 notified cases), with an average of 683 notifications for the 11 seasons before this.1 The November 2...
