We report a 28-year-old male patient with a pituitary insufficiency after a simple fracture of the sella turcica. He was injured by a long nail that punctured the lower jaw. No fracture other than that of the sella turcica was detected. An endocrinological examination revealed both anterior and pituitary dysfunction and diabetes insipidus that continued for about two months.

A concha non-pneumatized sphenoid is considered to be a contraindication for the transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary adenoma. Specifically, this anatomical variation makes it difficult to approach the sella turcica. However, in this report, an intra-operative navigational system was used as a guide to access the sella through the sphenoid sinus. This procedure was found to be both reasonab...

Since 1938, nine cases of nasopharyngeal involvement by craniopharyngioma have been described in the medical literature (1–3). Six of these cases involved the sella turcica, and all but one (1) extensively involved the sphenoid sinus. We report a case of a nasopharyngeal craniopharyngioma sparing the sella turcica. The tumor is thought to have likely arisen from the pharyngeal hypophysis. Magne...

Introduction: After the third molars, the maxillary canines are the most frequently impacted teeth. Sella turcica bridging (STB) can be used as a predictive factor to help orthodontists in early diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between palatal canine impaction (PCI) and STB. Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, in available lateral cephalograms a...

The pituitary gland's role as a functional matrix for sella turcica has not been suggested in orthodontic literature. This paper is an attempt to correlate the role of pituitary gland in the development of sella turcica. A case report of dwarfism associated with hypopituitarism is presented to highlight the above hypothesis.

A 35 year old woman presented with severe primary hypothyroidism and galactorrhea. A very high prolactin level was also detected and computerized tomography scan of the sellar region demonstrated an enlarged pituitary gland associated with contrast enhancement. Replacement therapy with thyroxine corrected both biochemical and clinical abnormalities but empty sella developed during this therapy....

The aim of the study was to conduct a long-term follow-up on the stability of the hard tissues after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) with rigid internal fixation (RIF)to set back the mandible and to compare it with that of mandibular advancement performed by the same team of surgeons and with the same examination protocol. Seventeen consecutive patients (6 females and 11 males) could ...

Longstanding hydrocephalus and raised intracranial pressure can lead to unusual anatomical variants in the floor of the third ventricle, which may be important when performing endoscopic third ventriculostomy. Two middle aged patients with symptomatic longstanding hydrocephalus had scans that showed ventricular hydrocephalus, an empty sella, and a dilated infundibular recess which herniated int...
