BACKGROUND Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which metabolizes many peptides and plays a key role in blood pressure regulation and vascular remodeling, as well as in reproductive functions, is expressed as a type-1 membrane glycoprotein on the surface of endothelial and epithelial cells. ACE also presents as a soluble form in biological fluids, among which seminal fluid being the richest in ...

background: glycosidases profusion in male reproductive fluids suggests a possible relationship with sperm function. although hexosaminidase (hex) is the most active glycosidase in epididymal fluid and seminal plasma, as well as in spermatozoa, glucosidase is considered a marker for epididymal function and azoospermia. objective: the aim of this study was to determine hex activity in seminal pl...

Recent evidence shows that seminal fluid can affect females and offspring independently of fertilisation in species lacking conventional 'nuptial gifts'. We argue that a hypothesis from paternal investment systems - that selection can favour changing female preferences that maximise both sperm-borne and seminal fluid-borne benefits - could therefore apply much more broadly.

Seminal fluid enhanced human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection by transactivating the HTLV-1 long terminal repeat promoter, which is chromosomally integrated in a cell-type-dependent manner. Our data may indicate a potential role for seminal fluid in the sexual transmission of HTLV-1 and imply complex features of regulation of HTLV-1 expression.

The seminal fluid of males from vertebrate and invertebrate taxa is a complex mixture of biologically potent molecules and is far more than a medium to support the successful transit of sperm. But the complexity of this mixture, even in the fly, is only now being fully realised. Recent research is highlighting extraordinarily high evolutionary lability within the genes that encode seminal fluid...

Ram seminal plasma increases the fertility of frozen-thawed ram spermatozoa deposited into the cervix. The aim of the current study was to compare the effect of ram seminal plasma to that of bull seminal plasma, dog prostatic fluid, protein-free TALP TrilEq (Triladyl with 0.5 mt of Equex STM paste added to each 100 mt) and heat-treated skim milk on longevity and percentages of progressively mot...

that of serotomn in CO-treated samples. Three other compounds (N-acetyl serotonin, N-methyl serotonin, and 5hydroxyindole, all from Sigma Chemical Co.) previously used as internal standards in the determination of serotonin from various tissues were not suitable for the present method. NAcetyl serotonin was too strongly remined in the present chromatographic system; N-methyl serotonin, in turn,...

This colorimetric method for determination of zinc in seminal liquid is based on the reaction between zinc and 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol in a buffered solution at pH 9.5. It is very simple, fast (approximately equal to 10 min), and economical. It can be used to determine zinc in "whole" semen, seminal plasma, or isolated spermatozoa. We verified its accuracy for sample concentrations up to 0.4...
