A total of 339 Yersinia strains were tested for virulence-associated autoagglutination and hemagglutinin (HA) production. Autoagglutination was frequent among human clinical isolates belonging to Y. enterocolitica serogroups O:3, O:8, and O:9 and among porcine isolates of serogroups O:3 and O:9. Positive autoagglutination results were also observed in serogroups O:1 and O:2, associated with out...

Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is a gram-negative bacterium able to infect different animal species, including human beings. This bacterium causes economic losses to the livestock industry because of its high morbidity and mortality in animals. In this work, we report the characterization of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) released into the culture medium by different Pm serogroups. Purified OMVs in...

Previously common in Brazil, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains of serogroups O55, O111, and O119 are now rare, while enteroadherent strains other than EPEC, belonging to serogroups such as O125, were prevalent among 126 diarrheic infants less than 1 year old who were surveyed. None of these strains had the EPEC bundle-forming pilus (bfpA) gene.

Fifteen spiroplasma strains, representing five serological subgroups classified in three distinct serogroups, and four strains unassigned to serogroups were examined for sensitivity to antibiotics. The data contribute to the characterization of spiroplasmas and enlarge comparisons between plant pathogenic strains and strains that are evidently a part of the normal epiphytic microflora.

Cattle are a primary reservoir of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), and contaminated beef products are a source of human infections. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service declared seven EHEC serogroups (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145, and O157) as adulterants in raw ground beef. Sampling a large number of animals for EHEC surveillance or evaluations of...

Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays were developed for detection of pathogenic strains belonging to Escherichia coli serogroups O22 and O91. The O-antigen gene cluster of E. coli O22 was sequenced to identify genes that could be employed as targets for serogroup-specific PCR assays. The wzx and wzy genes in the O-antigen gene clusters of E. coli O22 and E. coli O91 were selected as...

Rhizosphere response was studied as a factor in competition among indigenous Rhizobium japonicum serogroups for the nodulation of soybeans under field conditions. R. japonicum serogroups 110, 123, and 138 were found to coexist in a Waukegan field soil where they were determined to be the major nodulating rhizobia in soybean nodules. Competitive relationships among the three serogroups in that s...

Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen that can cause serious illness in immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, the elderly, and newborns. The aim of this study was to: (i) evaluate the prevalence and contamination level [most probable number (MPN)] of L. monocytogenes in 567 retail raw foods (fishery products, n = 154; raw/fresh meat, n = 123; frozen foods, n = 110; ...

Three building complexes in Kuala Lumpur were surveyed for the presence of legionellae in cooling towers. The organisms were grown from 12 out of 46 samples of water collected from 30 towers. L. pneumophila serogroups 1 and 7 were the commonest serogroups isolated. None belonged to the Pontiac subgroup of L. pneumophila serogroup 1.

Cholera is a global disease that has persisted for millennia. The cholera toxin (CT) from Vibrio cholerae is responsible for the clinical symptoms of cholera. This toxin is a hetero-hexamer (AB(5)) complex consisting of a subunit A (CTA) with a pentamer (B(5)) of subunit B (CTB). The importance of the AB(5) complex for pathogenesis is established for the wild type O1 serogroup using known struc...
