Colicin-mediated killing is an example of allelopathy, which has been found among several bacteria. Screening of 42 strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from diarrheal patients revealed that 39 (93%) S. sonnei strains were positive for colicin production against Escherichia coli DH5α. In the PCR-based detection of the colicin types, 36 (92.3%) were identified as E3, 2 (5.1%) as E3 and E8, and 1 ...

In this paper, a Whole-Bacteria SELEX (WB-SELEX) strategy was adopted to isolate specific aptamers against Shigella sonnei. Real-time PCR amplification and post-SELEX experiment revealed that the selected aptmers possessed a high binding affinity and specificity for S. sonnei. Of the 21 aptamers tested, the C(t) values of the SS-3 and SS-4 aptamers (Ct = 13.89 and Ct = 12.23, respectively) had ...

The frequencies of tetracycline resistance determinants of the classes A, B, C, and D were determined in 53 non-lactose-fermenting clinical isolates. The most frequent class of determinant in Salmonella typhimurium and Shigella flexneri strains was class B; however, the predominant determinant in Shigella sonnei strains was class C.

BACKGROUND Shigella, a major diarrheal disease pathogen worldwide, is the target of vaccine development. The Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) investigated burden and etiology of moderate-to-severe diarrheal disease in children aged <60 months and matched controls without diarrhea during 3 years at 4 sites in Africa and 3 in Asia. Shigella was 1 of the 4 most common pathogens across sites...

background and objective: shigella species belong to the family enterobacteriaceae, which cause dysentery with abdominal pain and tenesmus in human. our country is one of the endemic and occasional epidemic areas of the disease. in the present study, repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (rep-pcr) technique that has high differentiation and specificity power compared to ph...

Shigella sonnei is a major contributor to the global burden of diarrhoeal disease, generally associated with dysenteric diarrhoea in developed countries but also emerging in developing countries. The reason for the recent success of S. sonnei is unknown, but is likely catalysed by its ability to acquire resistance against multiple antimicrobials. Between 2011 and 2013, S. sonnei exhibiting resi...

The activities of six fluoroquinolones were determined for 117 separate strains of Shigella sonnei. The order of increasing activity (MICs for 90% of strains tested) was enoxacin (0.25 micrograms/ml), temafloxacin (0.032 micrograms/ml), sparfloxacin (0.016 micrograms/ml), CI-960 (0.008 micrograms/ml), ciprofloxacin (0.008 micrograms/ml), and PD-131628-2 (0.008 micrograms/ml). These data, along ...

Studies were undertaken to manufacture a multivalent Shigella inactivated whole-cell vaccine that is safe, effective, and inexpensive. By using several formalin concentrations, temperatures, and incubation periods, an optimized set of inactivation conditions was established for Shigella flexneri 2a, S. sonnei, and S. flexneri 3a to produce inactivated whole cells expressing a full repertoire of...

Shigella species and Escherichia coli are closely related organisms. Early phenotyping experiments and several recent molecular studies put Shigella within the species E. coli. However, the whole-genome-based, alignment-free and parameter-free CVTree approach shows convincingly that four established Shigella species, Shigella boydii, Shigella sonnei, Shigella felxneri and Shigella dysenteriae, ...

Six ampicillin-resistant clinical isolates of Escherichia coli that hyperproduced the chromosomal ampC beta-lactamase were studied. By DNA sequence analysis, we found that five of them were identical over an entire 449-base-pair sequence and carried a novel strong ampC promoter [Olsson, O., Bergström, S. & Normark, S. (1982) EMBO J. 1, 1411-1416]. Except for one base pair this sequence was iden...
