Diagnosis and management of intestinal disease in the dog and cat can present a considerable challenge to the clinician because of the many potential causes and the relative inaccessibility of the small intestine. Characterisation of intestinal disease usually occurs on the basis of histopathologic criteria, but these provide little information on the underlying cause of the damage whereas many...
We report a case of neonatal perforated appendicitis presenting with an early picture of intestinal obstruction secondary to entrapment of small bowel under inflamed appendix vermiformis.
Intestinal atresia in both twins from the same pregnancy is very rare. Only seven pairs of twins have been described. The authors report on two cases of monozygotic twins with different types of intestinal atresia and clinical evolution. Both pairs of observed twins turned out to be concordant for the presence of intestinal malformations and for the absence of other linked malformations; nevert...
Small bowel transplantation is acknowledged as auto- and allotransplantation. In both instances, there is up to a 4%-10% risk of postoperative ischemia, and as the small bowel is extremely susceptible to ischemia, the timely diagnosis of ischemia is important. The location of the transplant, whether it is buried in the abdominal cavity or in the neck region, increases the challenge, as monitori...
Jejunoileal atresia is of familial and non-familial in origins and classified into four different types. We herein report a rare occurrence of type I jejunal atresia in identical twins who were presented with neonatal intestinal obstruction. This report points towards common etiology of atresia in our cases and factors more than vascular accident appear to be involved.
Fetal intestinal volvulus is a rare life-threatening condition. Late diagnosis of volvulus contributes to high rate of morbidity and mortality. It has variable degrees of presentation and survival. Intrauterine volvulus may be complicated by intestinal atresia due to ischemic necrosis. To our knowledge, there are three reported cases of term fetal demise. We report a case of fetal intestinal vo...
