BACKGROUND The rapid growth in mobile phone penetration and use of Short Message Service (SMS) has been seen as a potential solution to improve medical and public health practice in Africa. Several studies have shown effectiveness of SMS interventions to improve health workers' practices, patients' adherence to medications and availability of health facility commodities. To inform policy makers...

In the paper, we evaluate our architecture for congestion management for SMS systems. In our architecture an SMS operator can dynamically define the maximum acceptable loss of messages of a nonguaranteed SMS service class, thereby controlling the trade-off between minimal message loss and maximum throughput in an SMS system. We study our proposal through simulations in different scenarios.

The Short Message Service (SMS) technology is one of the most powerful mobile technologies in current usage. Most students own a mobile phone with free SMS which can be used for learning. In this paper we explain how we used SMS for teaching and learning languages (both native and foreign). The conducted experiment presented a range of opportunities for integrating text into teaching and learni...

Delivering public services through the SMS channel is becoming popular and has demonstrated its benefits. Some of the initiatives involved big investment. However, citizens‟ acceptance of the services is still an issue. This paper presents a study on user acceptance of SMS-based e-government services. It assesses the adequacy of four prominent models of technology adoption (TRA, TAM, TPB, and D...

A number of genetic variants have been associated with cancer occurrence, however it may be the acquired somatic mutations (SMs) that drive cancer development. This study investigates the potential SMs and related genetic variants associated with the occurrence and development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We identified several SMs in NOTCH1 from whole-exome sequencing and v...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) derived from Pleurotus eryngii on the hematological and biochemical blood properties of elk. A total of 18, two and three-year-old elk were fed three different levels of SMS (0, 15 and 20%) in a corn-wheat bran diet for 80 days. The results indicated significantly high levels of blood monocytes, hemoglobin ...

BACKGROUND Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is an indolent malignancy that predominantly affects older individuals who are at risk for secondary malignancies (SMs). The objective of this study was to characterize the incidence of SMs after a diagnosis of WM with the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS With SEER-13 data (1992-2011), standardized incidence rat...

Nucleotide variation in the ACL5 gene region, which encodes spermine synthase, was analyzed for 21 Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes and one accession of Arabis gemmifera. In A. thaliana, dimorphism was also detected in the ACL5 region, as in other nuclear genes of this plant. The nucleotide diversity (pi) of the entire region, exon and intron was 0.0163, 0.0042 and 0.0293, respectively. The level ...

E-banking has become a new way of doing business and an important alternative for many banks and their customers. The acceptance of e-banking is affected by several factors, including the personal attitude of the users that influences normality and the context in which it is used. This study examines 150 customers of four major banks in Brunei Darussalam to explore the behavioral intent of the ...

BACKGROUND Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a complex neurobehavioral disorder associated with recurrent otitis. Most SMS cases result from heterozygous interstitial chromosome 17p11.2 deletions that encompass not only the intellectual disability gene retinoic acid-induced 1 but also other genes associated with immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, and/or malignancy. OBJECTIVES The goals of this stu...
