We describe an efficient Q-switched laser emission from a directly grown Er :YAG single-crystal fiber resonantly pumped by a laser diode in an off-axis configuration. The laser produces 2 mJ, 38 ns pulses at 1 kHz. We demonstrate the feasibility of a new concept of laser that benefits from both fiber and laser crystals: a cw diode-pumped solid-state laser with an intracavity fiber Bragg grating as the output coupler. The design of the laser cavity and the experimental demonstration are both described. Several applications are mentioned.

The new regime of resonant nuclear photoexcitation rendered possible by x-ray free electron laser beams interacting with solid state targets is investigated theoretically. Our results unexpectedly show that secondary processes coupling nuclei to the atomic shell in the created cold high-density plasma can dominate direct photoexcitation. As an example we discuss the case of Mo isomer depletion ...

Solid state lasers have remained a vibrant area of research because several major innovations expanded their capability. Major innovations are presented with emphasis focused on the laser efficiency. A product of efficiencies approach is developed and applied to describe laser performance. Efficiency factors are presented in closed form where practical and energy transfer effects are included w...

Continuous-wave mode-locked femtosecond 2-m solid-state laser with a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO4 (6 at.%) as gain medium was experimentally demonstrated. The mode locked laser generated stable pulses with average output power as high as 531 mW, pulse duration of 496 fs, and repetition rate of 97 MHz at 1975 nm. The research results show that Tm:CaYAlO4 is an excellent gain medium for femtosecond pulse ge...

A ytterbium-doped silica microcavity laser demonstrates stable laser emission while completely submerged in water. To our knowledge, it is the first solid-state laser whose cavity mode interacts with water. The device generates more than 2 microW of output power. The laser performance is presented, and low-concentration biosensing is discussed as a potential application.

In this paper, the enhanced continuum x-ray emission from nano-targets irradiated by long laser pulses is investigated numerically. The calculations are performed under different prepulse conditions, and the x-ray emissions from solid and nano-structured target are compared. The results show that x-ray yield can be enhanced significantly using a nano-layer with appropriate density. In addition,...

Based on the type of laser gain medium, lasers are mostly divided into four categories; gaseous, liquid (such as dye lasers), semiconductor, and solid state lasers. In recent past years, solid state lasers have been attracted considerable attentions in industry and scientific researches to achieve the high power laser devices with good beam quality. In solid state lasers the gain medium might b...

In this article we present a novel optical sensor allowing simultaneous measurements of axial position and tangential velocity of moving solid state objects. An extended laser Doppler velocimeter setup is used where two interference fringe systems are superposed slightly tilted. The axial position of moving solid state surfaces is determined via a phase evaluation. The phase laser Doppler dista...

Stereo-lithography is a distinctive form of technology which permits for the translation of computer aided design illustration to3D solid items within hours. In Stereo-lithography melted plastic is solidified in particular patterns by laser beam consequential in solid epoxy realization of a 3D project. This ultraviolet laser beam is directed by CAD data. Parts created using Stereo Lithography m...
