The HERMES experiment has measured double spin asymmetries of inclusive and semi–inclusive cross sections for the production of charged hadrons in deep– inelastic scattering of polarised positrons on polarised hydrogen and deuterium targets, in the kinematic range 0.023 < x < 0.6, and 1 GeV < Q < 15 GeV. For the data taken on the deuterium target, a RICH detector provides the complete identific...
This paper gives an overview of the spin structure of the nucleon with emphasis on a pedagogical presentation of the tools used to study this fundamental property of protons and neutrons. While many of the data currently available are shown, this paper is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field. Rather, the data are used to illustrate the concepts presented. The most recent progre...
We study the spin polarised tunnelling mechanism through magnetisation and magnetoresistance in the granular polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive manganite, La0.55Ho0.15Sr0.3MnO3. This system has a ferromagnetic transition temperature (Tc) of 255 K associated with a metal-insulator transition around the same temperature. We have investigated dependence of the magnetoresistance due to spin ...
General arguments suggest that the non-perturbative background field in QCD may have a non-trivial spin structure. We discuss how this effect may be manifest in semi-inclusive measurements of fast pions in polarised deep inelastic scattering.
Azimuthal single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons on a transversely polarised hydrogen target were observed. SSA amplitudes for both the Collins and the Sivers mechanism are presented.
We measure transverse magnetically focused photocurrent signals in an InSb/InAlSb quantum well device. Using optical spin orientation by modulated circularly polarized light an electron spin dependent signal is observed due to the spin-orbit interaction. Simulations of the focusing signal are performed using a classical billiard ball model which includes both spin precession and a spin dependen...
