Excessive vibration can be detrimental to the structural integrity of structures or can adversely affect the performance of instruments such as telescopes or antennas. One field in Structural Dynamics is the design and application of systems that reduce the amplitude and duration of vibration. There are two types of vibration suppression systems: passive and active. Passive means that the dampi...

To reduce a large number of variables to a smaller number of factors for modeling purposes, where the large number of variables precludes modeling all the measures individually. As such, factor analysis is integrated in structural equation modeling (SEM), helping confirm the latent variables modeled by SEM. However, factor analysis can be and is often used on a stand-alone basis for similar pur...

Sufficient cause interactions concern cases in which there is a particular causal mechanism for some outcome that requires the presence of 2 or more specific causes to operate. Empirical conditions have been derived to test for sufficient cause interactions. However, when regression outcome models are used to control for confounding variables in tests for sufficient cause interactions, the outc...

Metric information on similarities and distances in fold space is essential for quantitative work in structural bioinformatics and structural biology. Here we derive a suitable metric for protein structures from the fundamental axioms of similarity. Derivation of the metric also clarifies the relationship between the interrelated concepts of distance and similarity.

BACKGROUND The availability of suitable recombinant protein is still a major bottleneck in protein structure analysis. The Protein Structure Factory, part of the international structural genomics initiative, targets human proteins for structure determination. It has implemented high throughput procedures for all steps from cloning to structure calculation. This article describes the selection o...

Despite a steady supply of equipment and continuous training, teachers’ use of computers for instruction seems to be limited. Whether the problem is due to teachers’ ability or usage of computers for instruction is not well understood. In order to better understand the role of ability and usage in technology integration, teachers’ proficiency of technology integration was evaluated by separate ...

Structural genomics (SG) programs have developed during the last decade many novel methodologies for faster and more accurate structure determination. These new tools and approaches led to the determination of thousands of protein structures. The generation of enormous amounts of experimental data resulted in significant improvements in the understanding of many biological processes at molecula...

When analyzing the statistical and topological characteristics of complex networks, an effective and convenient way is to compute the centralities for recognizing influential and significant nodes or structures. Centralities for nodes are widely researched to depict the networks from a certain perspective and perform great efficiency, yet most of them are restricted to local environment or some...

With the exponential growth in the determination of protein sequences and structures via genome sequencing and structural genomics efforts, there is a growing need for reliable computational methods to determine the biochemical function of these proteins. This paper reviews the efforts to address the challenge of annotating the function at the molecular level of uncharacterized proteins. While ...

In this contribution the principles behind Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) are presented. SEM is used for assessing the quality of models that are proposed on the basis of theory and experience. This contribution has an introductory level.
