The generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) framework has been widely used in hydrologic studies. However, the extensive random sampling causes a high computational burden that prohibits the efficient application of GLUE to costly distributed hydrologic models such as the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). In this study, a multimodal optimization algorithm called isolatedspecia...

The use of a new technique, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) chemical imaging, has been demonstrated for the enhancement of latent fingermarks on a number of surfaces. Images of untreated fingermarks on glass backgrounds with excellent ridge detail were acquired using infrared chemical imaging. High quality fingermarks on glass backgrounds were also developed using ethyl cyanoacrylate (super g...

In this paper, we show how package templates, a new mechanism for code modularization, may be utilized to create reusable packages for selected design patterns that can be plugged into an existing architecture with a minimum of “glue code”. Exemplified through these implementations we consider some desirable extensions to the previously published version of the mechanism.

More and more software projects are using COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) components. One of the most challenging problems in COTS-based development is to evolve a system to follow changes in the customer requirements. It is therefore important to increase the changeability of the COTS-based system, so that new component can easily replace the problematic COTS components. Aspect-Oriented Progra...

Code pattern is proposed for component based software development (CBSD). A code pattern is used to capture the typical usages of a set of components as well as the interactions between them. Composition operations are defined to synthesize the glue code based on a repository of code patterns. Meta code patterns are patterns for components that share the same functionalities. In this paper, we ...

Biofilms are arguably the most common state of microbial growth found in nature and in patients infected with pathogenic organisms. A canonical feature of prokaryotic and eukaryotic biofilms is their production of an extracellularmatrix (Fig 1). The matrix provides a protective environment for biofilm cells, offering a three-dimensional framework for both surface adhesion and cell cohesion [1,2...

Metal ions are present in many different biological materials, and are capable of forming strong cross-links in aqueous environments. The relative contribution of different metal-based cross-links was measured in the defensive glue produced by the terrestrial slug Arion subfuscus. This glue contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, iron and copper. These metals are essential to the integrit...

Here we show that macrozwitterions of poly(ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate), commonly called Super Glue, can easily assemble into long and well defined fibers by electrospinning. The resulting fibrous networks are thermally treated on glass in order to create transparent coatings whose superficial morphology recalls the organization of the initial electrospun mats. These textured coatings are characteriz...

A study was undertaken to determine if it might be possible to prepare tissue sections on slides without the use of paraffin embedding, microtome sectioning, or cryostat sectioning which involve equipment and training not always available to scholars or professionals wishing to examine tissue microscopically. After evaluating many different reagents, cutting instruments and solid supports, we d...

Silk is a key innovation in spiders, fascinating both biologists and material scientists. However, to fulfil their biological function silken threads must be strongly fastened to substrates or other threads. The majority of modern spiders produce a unique and rather unexplored bio-adhesive: the two-compound pyriform secretion, which is spun into elaborate patterns (so called attachment discs) a...
