As part of the evolutionary drive to survive and reproduce, some organisms have developed unique surface morphologies. For example, mosquitoes have anti-fog compound eyes that are decorated with small boss arrays, and some desert beetles have patterned wings that enable them to collect water droplets from the atmosphere. Geckos can climb vertical walls and even hang upside down from the ceiling...

We prepared hierarchically structured, superhydrophobic surfaces, with single-, dual-, and triple-scale roughness, via a layer-by-layer (LbL) particle deposition approach. The dual-/triple-scale structured, superhydrophobic surfaces exhibited significantly reduced protein adsorption (up to a 90% decrease). Furthermore, platelet adhesion and activation was completely suppressed on the triple-sca...

We demonstrate the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces consisting of micropillars with hydrophobic sidewalls and hydrophilic tops, referred to as Janus micropillars. Therefore we first coat a micropillar array with a mono- or bilayer of polymeric particles, and merge the particles together to shield the top faces while hydrophobizing the walls. After removing the polymer film, the top face...

Even with the recent extensive study into superhydrophobic surfaces, the fabrication of such surfaces on the inside walls of a pipe remains challenging. In this work we report a convenient bi-layered pipe design using a thin superhydrophobic metallic mesh formed into a tube, supported inside another pipe. A flow system was constructed to test the fabricated bi-layer pipeline, which allowed for ...

The superhydrophobic silica coating has a great performance of self-cleaning which can be applied in the field of energy saving, anti-icing, drag reduction, etc. In this paper, Trimethyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) /Trimethylchlorosilan (TMCS) superhydrophobic silica coating with two-layer structure was dip-coated. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images show that the surface morphology of MTMS/TMCS si...

A versatile, fast, and nature-inspired polyphenol chemistry surface modification was applied to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces with micro-grooved structures in this study. Tannic acid and iron ion (TA–FeIII) complexes were employed as a molecular building block for anchoring biomimetic coating onto the wood substrate with catalytically reducing formative Ag ions as the rough surface to ensur...

Rough structures created from bulk materials at the surface could have superior durability. Superhydrophobic colorful surfaces were fabricated through chemical etching of the fiber surfaces, followed by diffusion of fluoroalkylsilane into fibers. The obtained superhydrophobic textiles show strong durability against severe abrasion, long-time laundering, and boiling water.

Microtextured superhydrophobic surfaces have become ubiquitous in a myriad of engineering applications. These surfaces have shown potential in friction reduction applications and could be poised to make a big impact in thermal management applications. For instance higher heat transfer rate with less pumping power might be achievable through the aid of superhydrophobic surfaces. However, past an...

In this work, electrically controlled fully reversible wetting-dewetting transitions on superhydrophobic nanostructured surfaces have been demonstrated. Droplet behavior can be reversibly switched between the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter state and the hydrophilic Wenzel state by the application of electrical voltage and current. The nature of the reversibility mechanism was studied both exper...

– We use a free energy lattice Boltzmann approach to investigate numerically the dynamics of drops moving across superhydrophobic surfaces. The surfaces comprise a regular array of posts small compared to the drop size. For drops suspended on the posts the velocity increases as the number of posts decreases. We show that this is because the velocity is primarily determined by the contact angle ...
