An HPTLC densitometric method has been developed to estimate apigenin in Turnera aphrodisiaca aerial and its segregated parts (leaves, stems, flowers and fruits) so that plant can be standardized on the basis of its bioactive marker. The apigenin content in methanol extract of T. aphrodisiaca aerial parts was found to be about fourteen times less than acid hydrolyzed methanol extract of the pla...

CURRENT SCIENCE, VOL. 104, NO. 4, 25 FEBRUARY 2013 426 is, thus, simultaneous with or occurs immediately before anthesis (Figure 1 c– f ). (ii) In some flowers opening initiates by the expansion of the apices of the tepals, the stimulus of which then spreads laterally (Figure 1 a and b). However, what is interesting to note is that the anthers are still in an undehisced state. It takes more tha...

We obtain the maximum likelihood estimator of the central subspace under conditional normality of the predictors given the response. Analytically and in simulations we found that our new estimator can preform much better than sliced inverse regression, sliced average variance estimation and directional regression, and that it seems quite robust to deviations from normality.

Partial dimension reduction is a general method to seek informative convex combinations of predictors of primary interest, which includes dimension reduction as its special case when the predictors in the remaining part are constants. In this paper, we propose a novel method to conduct partial dimension reduction estimation for predictors of primary interest without assuming that the remaining ...

The Ipomopsis aggregata group (Polemoniaceae) and Aquilegia formosa-Aquilegia caerulea group (Ranunculaceae) in western North America contain species with ornithophilous flowers and related species with sphingophilous flowers. The ornithophilous and sphingophilous species are sympatric over large areas and remain distinct in some sites where they grow close together. Floral isolation-a combinat...

Plant reproduction is highly vulnerable to global climate change components such as carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]), temperature (T), and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of season-long exposure to treatments of [CO(2)] at 360 (control) and 720 micromol mol(-1) (+CO(2)), temperature at 30/22 degrees C (control) and 38/30 degrees C...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Several members of Bromeliaceae show adaptations for hummingbird pollination in the Neotropics; however, the relationships between floral structure, nectar production, pollination and pollinators are poorly understood. The main goal of this study was to analyse the functional aspects of nectar secretion related to interaction with pollinators by evaluating floral biology, ce...

Several endogenous and environmental factors need to be integrated to time the onset of flowering. Genetic and molecular analyses, primarily in Arabidopsis thaliana and rice, have shown that CONSTANS (CO) and FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) play central roles in photoperiod-dependent flowering. The overall picture is that CO acts in the phloem companion cells of leaves and that its main effect is to ind...
