Characterizing size related thermal properties of nanoclusters is challenging due to the requirement to accurately control both their average sizes and the size distributions. In this work, temperature-dependent Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy and the phenomenological bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) model were employed to investigate the size-dependent Einstein temperatu...

Stabilization of silicon micro-resonators is a key requirement for their inclusion in larger photonic integrated circuits. In particular, thermal refractive index shift in non-linear applications can detune devices from their optimal working point. A cavity stabilization scheme using a micro-processor-based feedback control loop is presented based on a local thermal heater element on-chip. Usin...

Chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching was studied in intact, C 0 2 fixing chloroplasts isolated from spinach. Energy-dependent quenching (qE), which is correlated with the light-induced pro ton gradient across the thylakoid membrane presumably reflects an increase in the rate-constant of thermal dissipation of excitation energy in the photosynthetic pigment system. The extent of qE was found to...

[1] Traditionally, analytical solutions for heat transport in soils have been used in combination with heat pulse probe (HPP) measurements to estimate soil thermal properties. Although the analytical method has resulted in accurate estimation of soil thermal properties, we suggest that parameter estimation using inverse modeling (IM) provides new and unique opportunities for soil thermal charac...

Architects form an integral link in the design of e.cient buildings. Energy-e.cient design strategies therefore, require architects and engineers to work closely together in optimising the building shell. However, this is not always practical. Architects must therefore, be able to perform a preliminary thermal analysis if energy e.cient design strategies are to succeed. Existing tools do not ca...

This paper proposes a design of Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm based Proportional plus Integral controller using Area Requirement (AR) Criterion for the Load Frequency Control of a two area multi unit interconnected thermal reheat power system without and with Gas Turbine unit. The system was simulated and the output responses of the frequency deviations, tie-line power deviation and con...

We develop and test a thermally activated state transition technique for ultraweak force measurement. As a force sensor, the technique was demonstrated on a classical Brownian bead immersed in water and restrained by a bistable optical trap. A femto-Newton-level flow force imposed on this sensor was measured by monitoring changes in the transition rates of the bead hopping between two energy st...

This paper proposes an adaptive energy minimization approach that hierarchically applies DVFS, thread-to-core affinity and dynamic concurrency controls (DCT) to minimize the energy consumption and improve lifetime reliability through balanced thermal controls, while meeting a specified power budget requirement. Fundamental to this approach is an iterative learning-based control algorithm that a...

A requirement for many quantum computation schemes is the ability to measure single spins. This paper examines one proposed scheme: magnetic resonance force microscopy, including the effects of thermal noise and back-action from monitoring. We derive a simplified equation using the adiabatic approximation, and produce a stochastic pure state unraveling which is useful for numerical simulations.
