A general theory of thermally stable anisotropic laminates with bending-extension coupling is presented in the framework of linear thermo-elasticity. It is based upon the use of tensor invariants, found by the polar formalism for bi-dimensional anisotropic elasticity. The extension of the results to moisture absorption effects is also proved.

The fully thermally coupled distillation column offers an alternative to conventional distillation towers, with the possibility of savings in both energy and capital costs. This innovative and promising alternative provides the opportunity to separate a multicomponent mixture into fractions with high purities merely in one column. A lack of knowledge still exists when dealing with the startup o...

In this paper we review and clarify some aspects of the asymptotic analysis of the compressible Navier Stokes equations in the low Mach number limit. In the absence of heat exchange (the isentropic regime) this limit is well understood and rigorous results are available. When heat exchange is considered different simplified models can be obtained, the most famous being the Boussinesq approximat...

Many researchers propose dedicated hardware [1, 2] to process sensor data on mobile systems, reducing the burden on generalpurpose computing units and increasing a system’s energy eciency. However, these hardware units are placed at a distance from sensors, thermally isolated to avoid an increase in thermal noise of sensors that can degrade the €delity of the sensor output signal. In this post...

A modified coupled-mode (CM) model is proposed for the optical behavior of thermally chirped Bragg gratings. The model accounts for the axial gradient in the modulation wavenumber, which has been ignored in the classical CM model. The model is used to characterize the optical behavior of a polymethyl methacrylate-based polymer Bragg grating subjected to nonisothermal conditions. The validity of...

The Petlyuk distillation system has been considered with special interest in the field of separation processes because of the high energy savings that it can provide with respect to the operation of sequences based on conventional columns. The original design of the Petlyuk structure, however, shows two interconnections that seem to affect its operational and controllability properties. For one...

We present a four channel optical add-drop multiplexer based on vertically coupled microring resonators fabricated in Si3N4/SiO2. The device with a Manhattan-like geometry has a footprint of 0.25 mm and can find application in metro-networks. The individual micro-resonators have a 50 μm radius and are thermally tunable over a 4 nm range. The maximum power consumption per ring is 0.5 W. Measurem...

We experimentally study the dynamical states of a freely moving, floating heat blanket that is coupled with a thermally convecting fluid. This floating boundary modifies the large-scale flow pattern in the bulk and destabilizes the coupled system, leading to spontaneous oscillations. As the moving boundary exceeds a critical size, the system makes a transition from an oscillatory state to a wea...
