This paper summarises the use of digital remotely sensed data for Quaternary deposits mapping in central Sweden. Landsat TM scene of the beginning of May 1985 was applied. Only six groups of quaternary deposits were distinguished. The classification accuracy of the resultant map was about 50 % in average. Comparison was done with the existing map of Quaternary deposits.
Travertine is a sedimentary rock with generally layered structure, mainly comprising carbonate. They are used for different purposes in interior and exterior spaces by cutting parallel or perpendicular to the bedding according use. may contain several facies linked variations conditions during formation. With these features, travertine one of rocks anisotropy most commonly observed. In this stu...
Understanding carbon dioxide (CO2) reservoir to surface migration is crucial successful capture and sequestration approaches; especially fault/reservoir interactions under injection pressure. Through seismic imaging, we explore regolith shallow stratigraphy across the Little Grand Wash fault. The presence of natural CO2 seeps, travertine tufa deposits confirm modern ancient fault-controlled lea...
Although fossil fluvial travertines have been described, factors controlling their formation are poorly understood because of the paucity modern counterparts. To disclose processes affecting deposition, a travertine system at Bagni San Filippo (Siena, central Italy) was studied here and compared with other cases. The occur in valley an ephemeral stream, but continuous water influx from hot spri...
Fish Lake Valley, in Esmeralda County, Nevada, sits at the southern end of the Mina Deflection where the very active Death Valley-Furnace Creek-Fish Lake Valley fault system makes a right step to transfer slip northward into the Walker Lane. Northern Fish Lake Valley has been pulling part since ca. 6 Ma, primarily along the Emigrant Peak normal fault zone (Stockli et al., 2003). Elevated tecton...
Salt crystallization is one of the most powerful weathering agents that may cause a rapid change in the mechanical properties of stones, and thus limit their durability. Consequently, determining the mechanical properties of stones due to salt crystallization is important for natural building stones used in marine environmental and mild climatic conditions, which expose excessive salt crys...
The hand stencils of European Paleolithic art tend to be considered of pre-Magdalenian age and scholars have generally assigned them to the Gravettian period. At El Castillo Cave, application of U-series dating to calcite accretions has established a minimum age of 37,290 years for underlying red hand stencils, implying execution in the earlier part of the Aurignacian if not beforehand. Togethe...
