Photolytic uncaging of biologically-active molecules within cells is a powerful technique. However, the delivery of uncaging light into the cytosol can vary between cell types, individual cells of the same type, and different loci within an individual cell because of optical differences in absorbance and light-scattering properties of the cytoplasm. Here, we demonstrate a simple technique for m...

Interactions with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and chromophores in the skin happen on a daily basis. Photodermatoses, which are abnormal responses to UV exposure, can be classified into subgroups based on pathogenesis. This review will discuss the clinical features, pathogenesis, photobiologic evaluation, prognosis and therapies of the most common photodermatoses.

Opacity effects on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission from laser-produced tin (Sn) plasma have been experimentally investigated. An absorption spectrum of a uniform Sn plasma generated by thermal x rays has been measured in the EUV range (9-19 nm wavelength) for the first time. Experimental results indicate that control of the optical depth of the laser-produced Sn plasma is essential for obtai...

A large, dc-electric-field-induced nonlinear optical susceptibility is exploited to produce ultraviolet radiation in the range 2453-2476 A by the process of sum-frequency generation in sodium. The interaction is resonantly enhanced at the first intermediate level by the 3 (2)P(3/2) state and at the second intermediate level by a Rydberg state. Conversion efficiencies of 10(-5) have been obtaine...

The present work reports on the generation of short-pulse coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation of controlled polarization. The proposed strategy is based on high-order harmonics generated in pre-aligned molecules. Field-free molecular alignment produced by a short linearly-polarized infrared laser pulse is used to break the isotropy of a gas medium. Driving the aligned molecules by a circular...

Electron hole (radical cation) migration in DNA, where the quantum transport of an injected charge is gated in a correlated manner by the thermal motions of the hydrated counterions, is described here. Classical molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with large-scale first-principles electronic structure calculations reveal that different counterion configurations lead to formation of st...

The role of the nucleolus in the transfer of RNA from nucleus to cytoplasm was examined by means of experiments in which the nucleolus or other parts of the nucleus were inactivated by a microbeam of ultraviolet light. These experiments confirmed previous work in showing that such inactivation of the nucleolus inhibited the appearance in the cytoplasm, not only of ribosomal RNA, but also of oth...
