Upper extremity lymphedema is a relatively frequent complication following the management of breast cancer. This focused review of the pathophysiology, complications, and various treatment options now available for its management will allow physiatrists and other practitioners to better understand this condition and thereby serve as a resource for patients and other physicians.
Advances in microsurgical instruments and techniques have allowed for introduction of lymphaticovenous anastomosis as a potential surgical treatment for patients with upper and lower extremity lymphedema. This article reviews the approach to lymphaticovenous anastomosis patient selection and technical modifications that improve the ease and efficiency of the procedure.
Lymphedema is the progressive enlargement of tissue due to inadequate lymphatic function. Obesity-induced lymphedema of the lower extremities can occur once a patient's body mass index (BMI) exceeds 50. We report our first patient with obesity-induced lower extremity lymphedema who was followed prospectively before and after weight loss. A 46-year-old woman with a BMI of 80 presented to our Lym...
Lymphedema affects 3-58% of survivors of breast cancer and can result in upper extremity impairments. Exercise can be beneficial in managing lymphedema. Yoga practice has been minimally studied for its effects on breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of yoga on arm volume, quality of life (QOL), self-reported arm function, and hand grip s...

Lymphedema, a common complication of cancer treatment, is characterized by inflammation, fibrosis, and adipose deposition. We have previously shown that macrophage infiltration is increased in mouse models of lymphedema. Because macrophages are regulators of lymphangiogenesis and fibrosis, this study aimed to determine the role of these cells in lymphedema using depletion experiments. Matched b...
