Introduction. Management of postoperative central diabetes insipidus (DI) can be challenging from changes in volume status and serum sodium levels. We report a case successfully using a dilute vasopressin bolus protocol in managing hypovolemic shock in acute, postoperative, central DI. Case Report. Patient presented after bifrontal decompressive craniotomy for severe traumatic brain injury. He ...

Deverall, P. B., Muss, D. C., Macartney, F. J., and Settle, J. D. (1973). Thorax, 28, 756761. Osmolal balance after open intracardiac operations in children. Changes in plasma osmolality, urine osmolality, urine volume, total osmolal output, and free osmolal output have been studied in children between 2 and 10 years of age. All underwent elective open intracardiac operations. Plasma hypo-osmol...

Fluid balance is essential for normal functioning of the body. Oliguria (poor urine output) is usually associated with low circulatory blood volume (hypovolaemia), and can be a sign that a patient is acutely ill and deteriorating. Early warning scoring systems should identify the condition so that appropriate interventions can be undertaken to restore urine output and protect renal function.

BACKGROUND Ibuprofen treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) has been shown to be as effective as indomethacin in small randomized controlled trials, with possibly fewer adverse effects. However, adverse renal effects of ibuprofen have been noted in some trials and suspected in our practice. The purpose of this study was to examine whether ibuprofen and indomethacin treatment of PDA have com...

BACKGROUND Resuscitation fluid rates following burn are currently guided by a weight and burn size formulae, then titrated to urine output. Traditionally, 24h resuscitation is reported as volume of resuscitation received without direct consideration for the physiologic response. We propose an input-to-output ratio to describe the course of burn resuscitation and predict eventual outcomes. MET...

we report a case of multiple myeloma that presented with anorexia, fatigue, high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, bone marrow plasmacytosis of more than 30%, polyuria, and low urine specific gravity. this unusual presentation was diagnosed as nephrogenic diabetes insipidus secondary to a proximal tubular dysfunction. the tubular functional disturbance appeared to be related to the presence of lam...

Analytical, intra-individual, and interindividual components of variation for sodium, potassium, urea, creatinine, calcium, and phosphate were estimated from results for 24-h urine specimens collected from 15 apparently healthy individuals every four weeks for 40 weeks. Expressed as output, mean values differed for men and women, except for calcium. Our data on intra-individual variation were s...

The diuretic activity of methanol extract of Oxystelma esculentum aerial parts (MEOE) was studied in male Wister albino rats at 5h and 24h interval. The animals were divided into 5 groups: control, urea, furosemide and 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg MEOE. The extract was administered intraperitoneally (i.p) pretreated and all animals were saline MEOE. The urine volume (in mL) and electrolytes excretio...

Background Albumin is broadly prescribed for critically ill patients although it does not have a mortality benefit over crystalloids. One common use of albumin is to promote diuresis. Objectives To compare urine output in patients treated with furosemide with and without albumin and to assess other variables possibly associated with enhanced diuresis. Methods A retrospective study was conducted...
