P UTRESCINE has been found to induce chromosome aberrations in cells undergoing meiosis in Oenothera [8] but not in cells undergoing mitosis in roots of Vicia faba [9]. In re-examining the action of putrescine and cadaverine in less toxic concentrations [cf. 91, we have tested the ability of these polyamines either to induce chromosome breakage or to upset the process of chromosome condensation...

A number of well characterized legume lectins including the enzymic lectin from Vigna radiata were examined for immunological relatedness. The immunological cross-reactions observed indicate that most of the legume lectins, including Vigna lectin, are evolutionarily closely related proteins. The possibility that these proteins are homologs with enzymic functions is discussed.

Seed-cotyledons of Vicia faba L. an unconventional legume from Bangladesh were analyzed for chemical composition and protein functionality to assess its potential usage as an alternative source of protein. Proximate component in per cent were crude protein 30.57, crude fat 3.22, crude fibre 2.73, ash 3.61 and carbohydrate 59.87. With the exception of methionine plus cystine, the essential amino...

Faba bean plants (Vicia faba) showed remarkable resistant to wilt disease caused by Fusarium solani pv. Phaseoli when watered with a mixture of heavy metal at a concentration 10mg/L. However the use of Zn, Pb alone slightly increases the susceptibility of bean plants to Fusarium wilt. Plants exposed to Cd or Cu treatment accelerate the symptoms appearance in infected plant. The toxicity of a si...

In this study, ITS–rDNA region was used to identify some anamorphic powdery mildews in Guilan province. According to the results, Erysiphe species on Vicia faba and Sesbania punicea showed 100% similarity to each other, however, without ITS sequence of holotype of E. sesbaniae it is impossible to make conclusion whether Vicia faba powdery mildew fungus actually belongs to E. sesbaniae or E. tri...

Attempts were made to provide proof for the occurrence of cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate in healthy and crown gall tissues of Vicia faba. Although our purified extracts gave positive readings in the Gilman binding assay for cyclic AMP, they were not digested by a specific cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate phosphodiesterase from beef heart. The extracts were digested, however, by a part...

A new indole-3-acetic acid metabolite was isolated from broad bean (Vicia faba L. cv Chukyo) seedlings. It was a conjugate of dioxindole-3-acetic acid, aspartic acid, and glucose and was identified as 3-(O-beta-glucosyl)-2-indolone-3-acetylaspartic acid (molecular weight 484) from ultraviolet, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectra. Its natural content in 4-day-old Vicia seedlin...

With isolated epidermal strips of Vicia faba, the intensity of potassium-staining in the guard cells of stomata was calibrated against the uptake of radioactively labeled potassium. By using this calibration, the quantity of potassium that had accumulated in the guard cells, as stomata of leaves of Vicia open in the light, was estimated. Results support the hypothesis that in leaves, as well as...

Interspecific facilitation on phosphorus uptake was observed in faba bean/maize intercropping systems in previous studies. The mechanism behind this, however, remained unknown. Under nitrate supply, the difference in rhizosphere acidification potential was studied by directly measuring pH of the solution and by visualizing and quantifying proton efflux of roots between faba bean (Vicia faba L. ...

In total, 339 faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and 100 pea (Pisum sativum L.) accessions were screened for their ability to resist Callosobruchus chinensis L. in free choice laboratory tests. Four, 15, and 43 faba bean varieties were highly resistant, resistant, and moderately resistant to C. chinensis, respectively. Three immune, three highly resistant, and six resistant accessions were discovered am...
