The imaging of subsurface targets, such as landmines, using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is becoming an increasingly important area of research. Conventional image formation techniques expend large amounts of computational resources on fully resolving a region, even if there is a large amount of clutter. For example, standard backprojection algorithms require O(N). However, by using multi-res...
A selection of these reports is available in PostScript form at the Faculty's anonymous ftp-Abstract Any binary image can be represented by a quadtree. Therefore random quadtrees correspond to bounded random sets in the plane. We discuss various possibilities for randomizing the quadtree. The most natural randomization yields Mandelbrot percolation.
This paper presents a rate-distortion analysis for a simple horizon edge image model. A quadtree with anisotropy and rotation is performed in this kind of image, giving a toy model for a non-linear adaptive coding technique, and its rate-distortion behavior is studied. The effect of refining the quadtree decomposition in the Rate-Distortion decay is also studied.
We present a new I/O-efficient index structure for storing planar subdivisions. This so-called guard-quadtree is a compressed linear quadtree, which is provably efficient for map overlay, point location, and range queries in low-density subdivisions. In particular, we can preprocess a lowdensity subdivision with n edges, in O(sort(n)) I/Os, to build a guard-quadtree that allows us to: (i) compu...
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a proposed video compression standard, a successor to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding). It aims to substantially improve coding efficiency compared to H.264/AVC High Profile, in which transform unit (TU) has been added as one of the key advanced features, at the expense of traversal computation of transform and quantization quadtree. To release the...

Classical edge detection techniques use various ways of matrix representation of binary images. For large images, time and space requirements of these techniques make them non suitable for any practical applications like remote sensing or processing of fingerprints for commercial transactions. Quadtrees offer an excellent way to store and process an image, with lower space-time requirements. In...
A quadtree-based fully Eulerian finite volume approach for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction problems is presented. Both fluid and structure phases, which are assumed to be incompressible viscous, solved monolithically on whole computational domain. The discretization stencils limited first layer neighbors thus enhancing efficiency parallel computations while limiting numerical orde...
An approach based on the improved quadtree structure and region adjacency graph for the segmentation of a high-resolution remote sensing image is proposed in this paper. In order to obtain the initial segmentation results of the image, the image is first iteratively split into quarter sections and the quadtree structure is constructed. In this process, an improved fast calculation method for st...
