We report above-ground biomass (AGB), basal area, stem density and wood mass density estimates from 260 sample plots (mean size: 1.2 ha) in intact closed-canopy tropical forests across 12 African countries. Mean AGB is 395.7 Mg dry mass ha⁻¹ (95% CI: 14.3), substantially higher than Amazonian values, with the Congo Basin and contiguous forest region attaining AGB values (429 Mg ha⁻¹) similar to...

The outcome of 260 repairs of the radial and posterior interosseous nerves, graded by Seddon's modification of the Medical Research Council Special Committee's system, was analysed according to four patterns of injury; open 'tidy', open 'untidy', closed traction, and those associated with injury to the axillary or brachial artery. We studied the effect on the outcome of delay in effecting repai...

We report the detection of a 38 day period in the X-ray flux of the transient burster KS 1731-260 . The narrow peak of periodicity was detected during ∼TJD 10150–11050 when the source had a high and relatively stable X-ray flux. After ∼TJD 11100 the source became strongly variable on a time scale of months that contaminates the search for the 38 day periodicity. The detected period can not be a...

Functional C(-260)--> T polymorphism in the promoter of the CD14 gene has been reported to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). The functional role of the polymorphism, however, is still a matter of debate, since several studies have not proved its effect on clinical outcomes associated with atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality was assessed in a post-hoc a...

Persistence of preexcitation in sinus rhythm with procainamide infusion has been reported to occur in patients with a short anterograde accessory pathway effective refractory period (AERPAP) and this test has been proposed as a reliable noninvasive method to identify patients with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome who are at risk of sudden death. However, sudden death correlates best with a sh...
